General Information about Shovel Probes

The data files SP.TXT and SP.XLS provide general information about each shovel probe, including the total number of ceramic, bone, lithic, and other artifacts recovered. SP.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file; SP.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the ASCII file corresponds to one shovel probe. There are 543 lines, each with 9 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:

1 Number of the collection unit where the shovel probe was carried out. These correspond to the ID numbers provided in the COLL_NUMBERS layer of the Map of Collection Units page of this dataset.
2 Collection unit name. Provides the Russian site registry name and number that correspond to the collection unit where the probe was carried out. For sites encompassing more than one collection unit, a second sequential number is provided to uniquely identify each collection unit. Site names are provided for references purposes only, as the concept of "site" did not play any meaningful role in analysis.
3 Shovel probe ID. A unique ID identfing each separate shovel probe which corresponds to a GPS waypoint.
4 Number of ceramic sherds recovered from shovel probe.
5 Number of animal bones recovered from shovel probe.
6 Weight in grams of all animal bones recovered from shovel probe.
7 Number of chipped lithic artifacts recovered from shovel probe.
8 Other types of artifacts recovered. Separated by a semicolon if more than one.
9 Number of other types of artifacts recovered. Separated by a semicolon if more than one.

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

19 ,SarySakly1 South,305,0,2,10,0,,

This means that this shovel probe was excavated in collection unit number 19 (Russian site name: SarySakly1 South). The shovel probe ID (GPS waypoint) is 305. Two animal bones weighing 10 grams were recovered.

The last, or 543th line of the ASCII text file is:

17,Nonesite 5,1180s2,1,14,57.0,0,charcoal,1

This means that this shovel probe was excavated in collection unit number 17. There was no Russian site name assigned to this location. The shovel probe ID (GPS waypoint) is 1180s2. One ceramic sherd, 14 animal bones that weigh 57 grams, and one piece of charcoal were recovered.
