Mesitas Recent Period Household Dataset |
The data files GROUNDSTONE.TXT and GROUNDSTONE.XLS provide counts for different types of ground stone artifacts within each excavated context at the Mesitas community. GROUNDSTONE.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file; GROUNDSTONE.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the ASCII file represents one excavation context. There are 114 lines, each with 13 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:
1 | Household number. |
2 | Excavation unit. The unit number where the excavation context comes from. |
3 | Level. The arbitrary stratigraphic level that the artifacts came from:
A=0-10cm B=10-20cm C=20-30cm D=30-40cm |
4 | Number of metate fragments. |
5 | Number of mano fragments. |
6 | Number of polishing stone fragments. |
7 | Number of axe fragments. |
8 | Number of sphere fragments. |
9 | Number of pendant fragments. |
10 | Number of grinder fragments. |
11 | Number of hammer fragments. |
12 | Number of other types of ground stone artifact fragments. |
13 | Additional notes. Occasional comments about artifacts. |
The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:
HH1,005,A,1,,1,,,1,,,,
This means that the excavation context is household 1, excavation unit 005, level A (0-10 cm). The context contained 1 metate, 1 polishing stone, and 1 pendant fragment.
The last, or 114th line of the ASCII text file is:
HH10,675,A,,1,,,,,,,1,Yunque/Anvil
This means that the excavation context is household 10, excavation unit 675, level A (0-10 cm). The context contained 1 mano fragment and 1 other fragment identified in a note as a Yunque/Anvil.
