Mesitas Recent Period Household Dataset |
The data files CERAMIC.TXT and CERAMIC.XLS provide sherd counts BY ceramic type for each excavation context within the Mesitas community. The file also provides additional breakdown of decoration elements present on decorated Barranquilla Buff sherds. CERAMIC.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file; CERAMIC.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the ASCII file corresponds to one excavation context. There are 1449 lines, each with 27 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:
1 | Household number. |
2 | Excavation unit. The number of the excavation unit (grid square) that the sherds came from. |
3 | Level. The arbitrary stratigraphic level that the sherds came from:
A=0-10cm B=10-20cm C=20-30cm D=30-40cm |
4 | The number of Tachuelo Burnished (1000-600 BC) sherds with no decoration. |
5 | The number of decorated Tachuelo Burnished (1000-600 BC) sherds. |
6 | The number of Planaditas Burnished Red (600-300 BC) sherds with no decoration. |
7 | The number of decorated Planaditas Burnished Red (600-300 BC) sherds. |
8 | The number of Lourdes Red Slipped (300 BC-AD 1) sherds with no decoration. |
9 | The number of decorated Lourdes Red Slipped (300 BC-AD 1) sherds. |
10 | The number of Guacas Reddish Brown (AD 1-900) sherds with no decoration. |
11 | The number of decorated Guacas Reddish Brown (AD 1-900) sherds. |
12 | The number of Barranquilla Buff (AD 900-1530) sherds with no decoration. |
13 | The number of decorated Barranquilla Buff (AD 900-1530) sherds. |
14 | The number of California Heavy Gray (AD 900-1530) sherds with no decoration. |

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

This means that the excavation context is household 1, excavation unit 001, level A (0-10 cm). The context contained 7 undecorated Guacas Reddish Brown sherds, 66 undecorated Barranquilla Buff sherds, 8 Barranquilla Buff decorated sherds, and 4 sherds of other types. Of the Barranquilla Buff decorated sherds, 2 had incising and 1 was corrugated.
The last, or 1449th line of the ASCII text file is:
HH10,675,B,,,,,,,,,2,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
This means that the excavation context is household 10, excavation unit 675, level B (10-20 cm). The context contained 2 undecorated Barranquilla Buff sherds.
