The data files SURVLOTS.TXT and SURVLOTS.XLS contain data on all survey lots located on the corresponding maps. SURVLOTS.TXT is an ASCII text file; SURVLOTS.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line represents one survey lot. There are 9,841 lines in the text file, each with 32 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:
| 1 | Series (see Chapter 2 for an explanation of the numbering system) |
| 2 | Lot number (within the series) |
| 3 | Key: A combination of series and lot number for a unique text-string identifier for each lot (corresponds to the text strings with which lots are identified on the maps) |
| 4 | Field site number to which the lot belongs (preceded by SA) |
| 5 | Vegetation density: D=Dense; M=Moderate; E=Sparse; N=None; Blank=Missing data |
| 6 | Collection technique: S=Surface collection; P=Shovel probe; Blank=Missing data or Other (e.g. an artifact without provenience given to a survey team by a land owner) |
| 7 | Sherds collected: T=All; G=Large (>3 cm); D=Rims and decorated bodies; Blank=Missing data |
| 8 | Number of sherds of Tachuelo Burnished without decoration |
| 9 | Number of sherds of Tachuelo Burnished with decoration |
| 10 | Number of sherds of Ídolos Burnished without decoration |
| 11 | Number of sherds of Ídolos Burnished with decoration |
| 12 | Number of sherds of Planaditas Burnished Red without decoration |

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

This indicates that the data are for Series CA, Lot 1, with a text-string identifier of CA_1. The lot pertains to field site number SA201, the density of vegetation was moderate, the sherds are from a surface collection, and all visible sherds were collected. There were no Tachuelo or Ídolos sherds, 3 undecorated Planaditas sherds, 3 undecorated Lourdes sherds, 2 undecorated Guacas sherds, 3 undecorated Barranquilla sherds, and no modern sherds or unclassified sherds, for a total of 11 classified sherds.
The last (9,841st) line of the ASCII text file is:
VS,2020,VS_2020,2966,M,S,T,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,1,,0
This indicates that the data are for Series VS, Lot 2020, with a text-string identifier of VS_2020. The lot pertains to field site number SA2966, vegetation was moderate, the sherds are from a surface collection, and all sherds were collected. There were no sherds classified in any of the Prehispanic types, and 1 modern sherd, for a total of 0 classified sherds.
