The data files FOREIGNCERAMICS.TXT and FOREIGNCERAMICS.XLS provide a breakdown for a small amount of foreign ceramic sherds belonging to the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica found within the study area. These foreign ceramics are broken down according to the lot in which they were recovered, the (Guanacaste) cultural phase to which they belong, and whether or not sherds are from serving vessels and/or had decoration. These foreign sherds are not included in the regional demographic reconstructions detailed in other sections of this dataset or in the printed volume. CERAMICS.TXT is an ASCII text file; CERAMICS.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line represents one collection lot. There are 816 lines in the text file, each with 10 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

This indicates that the data pertains to collection lot 1, in which 0 Sapoá sherds were recovered, hence there are no decorated sherds sherds from serving vessels listed for this period. There were also no Bagaces sherds recovered, hence there are no decorated sherds and no sherds from serving vessels listed for this phase. Finally, there were no Tempisque sherds recovered, hence there are no decorated sherds and no sherds from serving vessels for this period.
The last, or 816th, line of the ASCII text file is:
816,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0
This indicates that the data pertains to collection lot 816, in which 0 Sapoá sherds were recovered, hence there are no decorated sherds sherds from serving vessels listed for this period.
