Ceramic Inventory

The data files CERAMICS.TXT and CERAMICS.XLS provide ceramic counts by phase, form, temper, and decoration for each of the 816 collection lots in the area of San Ramón de Alajuela. CERAMICS.TXT is an ASCII text file; CERAMICS.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line represents one collection lot. There are 816 lines in the text file, each with 47 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

Cartago sherds:

Cartago (numberof sherds by forms)

Cartago (number of sherds by size of temper grains)

Cartago (number of sherds by decoration)

Curridabat sherds:

Curridabat (number of sherds by forms)

Curridabat (number of sherds by size of temper grains)

Curridabat (number of sherds by decoration)

Pavas sherds:

Pavas (number of sherds by forms)

Pavas (number of sherds by size of temper grains)

Pavas (number of sherds by decoration)

Barva sherds:

Barva (number of sherds by forms)

Barva (number of sherds by size of temper grains)

Barva (number of sherds by decoration)

Chronologically undefined sherds

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

This indicates that the data pertains to collection lot 1, where 17 total sherds were found. These include a total of 17 Cartago phase sherds, 17 of which are from undefined forms, 0 are plates/escudillas/brazeros, 0 are bowls/tecomates, 0 are pots/jars, and 0 are other forms (pedestals, spindle whorls, adorments). Seventeen are coarse sherds while 0 are fine sherds, and 0 are decorated sherds while 17 are undecorated sherds. No Curridabat phase sherds were found, hence there are 0 undefined forms, 0 plates/escudillas/brazeros, 0 bowls/tecomates, 0 pots/jars, and 0 other forms (pedestals, spindle whorls, adorments). Since there are no Curridabat sherds in this lot, 0 are coarse and 0 are fine, and 0 are decorated and 0 are undecorated. No Pavas phase sherds were found, hence there are 0 undefined forms, 0 plates/escudillas/brazeros, 0 bowls/tecomates, 0 pots/jars, and 0 other forms (pedestals, spindle whorls, adorments). Since there are no Pavas sherds in this lot, 0 are coarse and 0 are fine, and 0 are decorated and 0 are undecorated. No Barba phase sherds were found, hence there are 0 undefined forms, 0 plates/escudillas/brazeros, 0 bowls/tecomates, 0 pots/jars, and 0 other forms (pedestals, spindle whorls, adorments). Since there are no Barba sherds in this lot, 0 are coarse and 0 are fine, and 0 are decorated and 0 are undecorated.

The last, or 816th, line of the ASCII text file is:

This indicates that the data pertains to collection lot 816, where a total of 4 sherds were recoverd. Two of these were Cartago phase sherds, 1 being from an undefined form, 0 from plates/escudillas/brazeros, 1 from bowls/tecomates, 0 from pots/jars, and 0 from other forms (pedestals, spindle whorls, adorments). Two of these sherds are coarse while there are no fine sherds, and there are no decorated sherds while 2 are undecorated. Also, 2 sherds from the Curridabat phase were recovered, out of which 0 are from undefined forms, 0 from plates/escudillas/brazeros, 2 from bowls/tecomates, 0 from pots/jars, and 0 from other forms (pedestals, spindle whorls, adorments). Two of these sherds are coarse while there are no fine sherds, and there are no decorated sherds while 2 are undecorated. No Pavas phase sherds were found, hence there are 0 undefined forms, 0 plates/escudillas/brazeros, 0 bowls/tecomates, 0 pots/jars, and 0 other forms (pedestals, spindle whorls, adorments). Since there are no Pavas sherds in this lot, 0 are coarse and 0 are fine, and 0 are decorated and 0 are undecorated. No Barba phase sherds were found, hence there are 0 undefined forms, 0 plates/escudillas/brazeros, 0 bowls/tecomates, 0 pots/jars, and 0 other forms (pedestals, spindle whorls, adorments). Since there are no Barba sherds in this lot, 0 are coarse and 0 are fine, and 0 are decorated and 0 are undecorated.
