El Hatillo Household Dataset
William A. Locascio

Lithic Inventory

The data files LITHIC.TXT and LITHIC.XLS contain data on the quantities of lithic materials recovered from each provenience during excavations of domestic units at El Hatillo. LITHIC.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file, which should be easy to import into spreadsheet, database, and statistical programs for manipulation and analysis. LITHIC.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet which is easier to browse, and can also be imported into many programs. Each line on the comma delimited file represents one provenience. There are 141 lines, each with 30 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

1 Area
2 Zone (Stratum)
3 Excavation Unit(s)
4 raw Material (not included in totals)
5 utilized flake
6 retouched flake (no usewear)
7 flake (no utilization)
8 bifacially worked scraping/chopping tool
9 burin
10 drill
11 projectile point
12 exhausted core
13 hammerstone
14 tool blank/unfinished tool (no usewear)
15 Trifacial Point
16 burnishing/polishing stone
17 mano
18 breadboard metate
19 decorated metate
20 axe/adze
21 axe flake
22 indeterminate ground and polished fragment
23 indeterminate ground only fragment (no polish)
24 unifacially worked scraping/chopping tool
25 unidirectional core
26 multidirectional core
27 indetrminate polish (not ground)
28 Total lithics per unit
29 Total lithics per zone
30 Total lithics per area

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

A,2,1,,,,3,,,1,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,4,9,188

Which means that the lithic assemblage belongs to Area A, Zone (Stratum) 2, Excavation Unit(s) 1. This provenience contains 0 raw material (not included in totals), 0 utilized flakes, 0 retouched flakes (no usewear), 3 flakes (no utilization), 0 bifacially worked scraping/chopping tools, 0 burins, 3 drill, 0 projectile points, 0 exhausted cores, 0 hammerstones, 0 tool blank/unfinished tools (no usewear), 0 Trifacial Points, 0 burnishing/polishing stones, 0 manos, 0 breadboard metates, 0 decorated metates, 0 axe/adzes, 0 axe flakes, 0 indeterminate ground and polished fragments, 0 indeterminate ground only fragments (no polish), 0 unifacially worked scraping/chopping tools, 0 unidirectional core, 0 multidirectional cores, 0 indetrminate polishs (not ground), 4 Total lithics per units, 9 Total lithics per zones, 188 Total lithics per area.

On the other hand, the last, or 86th, line of the ASCII text file is:

F,13,F7,, ,,4,,,,,2,,,,,1,,,,2,,,,,,,9,9,81

Which means that the lithic assemblage belongs to Area F, Zone (Stratum) 13, Excavation Unit(s) F7. This provenience contains 0 raw material (not included in totals), 0 utilized flakes, 0 retouched flakes (no usewear), 4 flakes (no utilization), 0 bifacially worked scraping/chopping tools, 0 burins, 0 drills, 0 projectile points, 2 exhausted cores, 0 hammerstones, 0 tool blank/unfinished tools (no usewear), 0 Trifacial Points, 0 burnishing/polishing stones, 1 mano, 0 breadboard metates, 0 decorated metates, 0 axe/adzes, 2 axe flakes, 0 indeterminate ground and polished fragments, 0 indeterminate ground only fragments (no polish), 0 unifacially worked scraping/chopping tools, 0 unidirectional core, 0 multidirectional cores, 0 indetrminate polishs (not ground), 9 Total lithics per units, 9 Total lithics per zones, 81 Total lithics per area.
