The file OBSIDIAN.TXT contains data on obsidian recovered from the excavations. These data are in the form of an ASCII text file that can be read directly or easily imported to an application program such as a database manager or statistics package. The file contains 3191 lines, one for each excavated provenience and combination of artifact characteristics. On each line are 23 numbers separated by commas. These are:

The first line of the file, for example, looks like this:

It contains information on an obsidian fragment from the Palace midden, bag 30, it is obsidian, a prismatic blade, of translucent streaked obsidian, 2.12 cm long, 0.87 cm wide, 0.2 cm thick, cortex is absent, it is not a regular blade, it is a terminal blade, there is no information of the portion of the blade, or the platform, or the bulb of percussion, the cross section is trapezoidal, there is retouch of the dorsal face, the retouch zone is bimarginal, the retouch type is abrupt, the muesca is bilateral, there is no information on platform modification, the fracture type is torsion, there is use wear, and the profile is convex.
The last line (the 3191st) is:

It contains information on an obsidian fragment from the Hinterland, provenience 710112312, it is obsidian, a prismatic blade, of transparent streaked obsidian, 2.66 cm long, 0.75 cm wide, 0.2 cm thick, cortex is absent, it is not a regular blade, it is a terminal blade, the portion of the blade is medial, there is no information on the platform, or the bulb of percussion, the cross section is trapezoidal, there is no information of the retouch face, or the retouch zone, or the retouch type, or the muesca, or on platform modification, the fracture type is torsion, there is use wear in the form of crude striations, and there is no information on profile.
