Taojiahu-Xiaocheng Settlement Dataset |
The data files CERAMIC.TXT and CERAMIC.XLS contain data on surface densities of ceramics for all periods and all survey collection units. They detail the calculation of the area-density index (the central population proxy used in analyzing the Taojiahu-Xiaocheng Settlement data) for each collection unit. CERAMIC.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file, which should be easy to import into spreadsheet, database, and statistical programs for manipulation and analysis. CERAMIC.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet which is easier to browse, and can also be imported into many programs. Each line in the data files represents one survey collection unit. There are 455 lines, each with 29 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:
1 | Collection unit number--an alphanumeric code that identifies each collection unit. These correspond to the collection unit numbers provided in the Location of all Collection Units section of this dataset. |
2 | Collection type--the methodology used in collecting artifacts G=General collection S=Systematic collection |
3 | Total number of Youziling sherds. |
4 | Total number of Qujialing sherds. |
5 | Total number of Shijiahe sherd. |
6 | Total number of Shang sherds. |
7 | Total number of Western Zhou sherds. |
8 | Total number of Eastern Zhou sherds. |
9 | Total number of Han sherds. |

11 | Total number of sherds collected. |
12 | Overall density (sherds/m2). |
13 | Area of the collection unit in hectares. |
14 | Youziling area-density index. Calculated by multiplying the Youziling sherd density/m2 (variable 12 multiplied by the number resulting from the division of variable 3 by variable 11) by the area of the collection unit (variable 13). |
15 | Qujialing area-density index. Calculated by multiplying the Qujialing sherd density/m2 (variable 12 multiplied by the number resulting from the division of variable 4 by variable 11) by the area of the collection unit (variable 13). |

19 | Eastern Zhou area-density index. Calculated by multiplying the Eastern Zhou sherd density/m2 (variable 12 multiplied by the number resulting from the division of variable 8 by variable 11) by the area of the collection unit (variable 13). |
20 | Han area-density index. Calculated by multiplying the Han sherd density/m2 (variable 12 multiplied by the number resulting from the division of variable 9 by variable 11) by the area of the collection unit (variable 13). |
21 | Wei-Jin area-density index. Calculated by multiplying the Wei-Jin sherd density/m2 (variable 12 multiplied by the number resulting from the division of variable 10 by variable 11) by the area of the collection unit (variable 13). |
22 | Youziling area-density index (variable 14) divided by 8 Youziling centuries. |
23 | Qujialing area-density index (variable 15) divided by 6 Qujialing centuries. |
24 | Shijiahe area-density index (variable 16) divided by 5 Shijiahe centuries. |
25 | Shang area-density index (variable 17) divided by 6 Shang centuries. |
26 | Western Zhou area-density index (variable 18) divided by 3 Western Zhou centuries. |
27 | Eastern Zhou area-density index (variable 19) divided by 5 Eastern Zhou centuries. |
28 | Han area-density index (variable 20) divided by 4 Han centuries. |
29 | Wei-Jin area-density index (variable 21) divided by 3.5 Wei-Jin centuries. |
The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:
A5,G,0,0,13,0,0,0,0,12,25,0.250,0.65,0.00000,0.00000,0.08405,0.00000,0.00000,
0.00000,0.00000,0.07759,0.00000,0.00000,0.01681,0.00000,0.00000,0.00000,0.00000,0.02217
This means that the collection unit number is A5 in which a general collection was taken. The collection recovered 0 Youzilng sherds, 0 Qujialing sherds, 13 Shijiahe sherds, 0 Shang sherds, 0 Western Zhou sherds, 0 Eastern Zhou sherds, 0 Han sherds, and 12 Wei-Jin sherds. Thus, the total number of sherds recovered was 25, and the assigned overall sherd density was 0.25 m2. The area that this collection represents is 0.65 hectares. The calculated area-density index is 0.00000 for Youzilng, 0.00000 for Qujialing, 0.08405 for Shijiahe, 0.00000 for Shang, 0.00000 for Western Zhou, 0.00000 for Eastern Zhou, 0.00000 for Han, and 0.07759 for Wei-Jin. The area-density index divided by 8 Youzilng centuries is 0.00000, by 6 Qujialing centuries is 0.00000, by 5 Shijiahe centuries is 0.01681, by 6 Shang centuries is 0.00000, by 3 Western Zhou centuries is 0.00000, by 5 Eastern Zhou centuries is 0.00000, by 4 Han centuries is 0.00000, and by 3.5 Wei-Jin centuries is 0.02217.
The last, or 455th line of the ASCII text file is:
C267,G,0,0,10,0,0,10,0,2,22,0.250,0.63,0.00000,0.00000,0.07127,0.00000,0.00000,
0.07127,0.00000,0.01425,0.00000,0.00000,0.01425,0.00000,0.00000,0.01425,0.00000,0.00407
This means that the collection unit number is C267 in which a general collection was taken. The collection recovered 0 Youzilng sherds, 0 Qujialing sherds, 10 Shijiahe sherds, 0 Shang sherds, 0 Western Zhou sherds, 10 Eastern Zhou sherds, 0 Han sherds, and 2 Wei-Jin sherds. Thus, the total number of sherds recovered was 22, and the assigned overall sherd density was 0.25 m2. The area that this collection represents is 0.63 hectares. The calculated area-density index is 0.00000 for Youzilng, 0.00000 for Qujialing, 0.07127 for Shijiahe, 0.00000 for Shang, 0.00000 for Western Zhou, 0.07127 for Eastern Zhou, 0.00000 for Han, and 0.01425 for Wei-Jin. The area-density index divided by 8 Youzilng centuries is 0.00000, by 6 Qujialing centuries is 0.00000, by 5 Shijiahe centuries is 0.01425, by 6 Shang centuries is 0.00000, by 3 Western Zhou centuries is 0.00000, by 5 Eastern Zhou centuries is 0.01425, by 4 Han centuries is 0.00000, and by 3.5 Wei-Jin centuries is 0.00407.
