The data files CERAMICS.TXT and CERAMICS.XLS provide ceramic sherd counts for each collection within the Liangcheng survey region, as well as an associated relative population index by period derived from each count. CERAMICS.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file, which should be easy to import into spreadsheet, database, and statistical programs for manipulation and analysis. CERAMICS.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet which is easier to browse, and can also be imported into many programs. Each line in the ASCII file represents a separate collection. There are 3630 lines, each with 28 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:
1 | Collection Unit ID |
2 | Survey Tract 02 = Yongxing Basin 04 = Sansumu |
3 | Team |
4 | Collection Unit No. |
5 | Site No. |
6 | Visibility: 1=low 2=medium 3=high |
7 | Area (ha) |
8 | Collection Type: 1=general 2=systematic |
9 | No. of Circles (provided for systematic collections) |
10 | Total Number of Sherds |
11 | Number of Laohushan Sherds |
12 | Number of Zhukaigou Sherds |
13 | Number of Warring States Sherds |
14 | Number of Han Sherds |
15 | Number of Liao Sherds |
16 | Number of Yuan Sherds |
17 | Overall surface sherd density (sherds per square meter) |
18 | Laohushan period surface sherd density (sherds per square meter) |
19 | Zhukaigou period surface sherd density (sherds per square meter) |
20 | Warring States period surface sherd density (sherds per square meter) |
21 | Han period surface sherd density (sherds per square meter) |
22 | Liao period surface sherd density (sherds per square meter) |
23 | Yuan period surface sherd density (sherds per square meter) |
24 | Relative Population Index for the Laohushan Period |
25 | Relative Population Index for the Zhukaigou Period |
26 | Relative Population Index for the Warring States Period |
27 | Relative Population Index for the Han Period |
28 | Relative Population Index for the Liao Period |
29 | Relative Population Index for the Yuan Period |
The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:
02A001,02,A,1,100,2,0.040,1,0,1,0,0,1,0,0,0,0.2500,0.0000,0.0000,0.2500,0.0000,0.0000,0.0000,0.0000,0.0000,0.0100,0.0000,0.0000,0.0000
This means that the collection unit ID is 02A001, the survey tract is 02 (Yongxing Basin), collected by team A, as collection unit number 1. The collection unit pertains to site number 100. The visibility code is 2 (medium). The area of the collection unit is .040 ha. The collection type is 1 (general), hence there are 0 collection circles. The total number of sherds collected is 1, with 0 Laohushan sherds, 0 Zhukaigou sherds, 1 Warring States sherds, 0 Han sherds, 0 Liao sherds, and 0 Yuan sherds. Sherd densities are 0.2500 overall, 0.0000 for Laohushan and Zhukaigou, 0.2500 for Warring States, and 0.0000 for Han, Liao, and Yuan. The Relative Population Index for the Laohushan Period is 0.000, for the Zhukaigou Period 0.0000, for the Warring States Period 0.0100, for the Han Period 0.0000, for the Liao Period 0.0000, and for the Yuan Period 0.0000.
The last, or 3630th line of the ASCII text file is:
04B999,04,B,999,1076,2,0.343,1,0,21,0,0,0,0,0,21,0.2500,0.0000,0.0000,0.0000,0.0000,0.0000,0.2507,0.0000,0.0000,0.0000,0.0000,0.0000,0.0860
This means that the collection unit ID is 04B999, the survey tract is 04 (Sansumu), collected by team B, as collection unit number 999. The collection unit pertains to site number 1076. The visibility code is 2 (medium). The area of the collection unit is .343 ha. The collection type is 1 (general), hence there are 0 collection circles. The total number of sherds collected is 21, with 0 Laohushan sherds, 0 Zhukaigou sherds, 0 Warring States sherds, 0 Han sherds, 0 Liao sherds, and 21 Yuan sherds. Sherd densities are 0.2500 overall, with the periods of Laohushan, Zhukaigou, Warring States, Han, and Liao having densities of 0.0000, and the Yuan period having a density of 0.2507. The Relative Population Index for the Laohushan Period is 0.000, for the Zhukaigou Period 0.0000, for the Warring States Period 0.0000, for the Han Period 0.0000, for the Liao Period 0.0000, and for the Yuan Period 0.0860.
