Daub Fragments

The data files DAUB.TXT and DAUB.XLS contain information about fragments of hard baked daub from structure walls. These fragments did not usually show clear evidence of burning but were evidently baked hard enough by the sun to survive, even on the surface. The majority were recovered in the intensive surface collections, but data are included here for those recovered from stratigraphic tests as well (see Upper Daling Region Settlement Dataset ). DAUB.TXT is a comma-delimited ASCII text file, which should be easy to import into spreadsheet, database, and statistical programs for manipulation and analysis. DAUB.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet which is easier to browse, and can also be imported into many programs. Each line represents one daub fragment. There are 718 lines, each with 6 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

1 Square or Test number: a four-digit number for 5-m intensive collection squares; a two-letter designation for stratigraphic tests.
2 Phase or Level: A = first phase of intensive surface collection; B = second phase of intensive surface collection (screening upper soil); a two-digit number = stratigraphic level in a test pit.
3 Key: a text string combining the square number and collection phase for intensive surface collections or the test number and level number for stratigraphic tests.
4 Weight in grams of the daub fragment.
5 Flat surface of exterior or interior wall: 0= absent; 1 = Present.
6 Cane or other impression of structural element: 0= absent; 1 = Present.

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

0005,B,0005B,1.5,0,1

This means that the daub fragment came from intensive collection Square 0005 and the second (soil screening) collection phase; it weighs 1.5 g, it does not have a flat wall surface, and it does have a cane or other structural impression.

The last, or 718th line of the ASCII text file is:

YA,02,YA02,1.2,0,0

This means that the daub fragment came from stratigraphic Test YA and Level 02, it weighs 1.2 g, and has neither a flat wall surface nor an impression of a structural element.
