Ceramics Data by Collection Square

The data files CERAMSQ.TXT and CERAMSQ.XLS contain data on ceramics organized by individual 5-m intensive collection square. CERAMSQ.TXT is a comma-delimited ASCII text file, which should be easy to import into spreadsheet, database, and statistical programs for manipulation and analysis. CERAMSQ.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet which is easier to browse, and can also be imported into many programs. Each line in CERAMSQ.TXT and CERAMSQ.XLS represents one collection phase in one 5-m intensive collection square. There are 799 lines, each containing 76 variables in the following order:

1 Square number: a four-digit number for 5-m intensive collection squares.
2 Phase: A = first phase of intensive surface collection; B = second phase of intensive surface collection (screening upper soil).
3 Key: a text string combining the square number and collection phase.
4 Household Unit: The household unit to which the square is assigned.
5 Total number of sherds.
6 Number of Early Neolithic sherds (pre-Hongshan, cf. Xinglongwa, Zhaobaogou).
7 Number of Hongshan sherds.
8 Number of Xiaoheyan sherds.
9 Number of Lower Xiajiadian sherds.
10 Number of Upper Xiajiadian sherds.
11 Number of Zhanguo-Han sherds from vessels.
12 Number of Zhanguo-Han sherds from roof tiles.
13 Number of Liao sherds from vessels.
14 Number of Liao sherds from roof tiles.

The first line of the ASCII text file CERAMSQ.TXT, for example, looks like this:

This means that the line contains data from the first collection phase in Square 0001; the square was assigned to Household Unit 015; there were 22 sherds, of which 18 were Hongshan, 3 were Liao vessels, and 1 was modern. The 18 Hongshan sherds were undecorated so all types of decoration were 0; none were slipped, burnished, or had mat impressions; all 18 were orange; all 18 were fine paste; 1 was a tongxingqi and 17 were indeterminate forms. Since there were no Xiaoheyan sherds, all Xiaoheyan attribute counts were 0. There were no daub fragments, weighing a total of 0.0 g.

The last, or 799th line of the ASCII text file CERAMSQ.TXT is:

The 8 Hongshan sherds were undecorated so all types of decoration were 0; none were slipped, burnished, or had mat impressions; 4 were orange ware and 4 were brown ware; 4 were coarse paste and 4 were fine paste; 1 was a guan and 7 were indeterminate forms. Since there were no Xiaoheyan sherds, all Xiaoheyan attribute counts were 0. There were no daub fragments, weighing a total of 0.0 g.
