Hongshan Ceramics Data by Household Unit

The data files CERAMHH.TXT and CERAMHH.XLS contain the data on Hongshan ceramics aggregated by household unit. CERAMHH.TXT is a comma-delimited ASCII text file, which should be easy to import into spreadsheet, database, and statistical programs for manipulation and analysis. CERAMHH.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet which is easier to browse, and can also be imported into many programs. Each line in CERAMHH.TXT and CERAMHH.XLS represents one household unit. There are 50 lines, each containing 42 variables in the following order:

1 Household Unit: The number of the household unit the line represents.
2 Total number of sherds.
3 Number of Early Neolithic sherds (pre-Hongshan, cf. Xinglongwa, Zhaobaogou).
4 Number of Hongshan sherds.
5 Number of Xiaoheyan sherds.
6 Number of Lower Xiajiadian sherds.
7 Number of Upper Xiajiadian sherds.
8 Number of Zhanguo-Han sherds from vessels.
9 Number of Zhanguo-Han sherds from roof tiles.
10 Number of Liao sherds from vessels.
11 Number of Liao sherds from roof tiles.
12 Number of Recent (post-Liao but pre-20th-century) sherds.
13 Number of Modern (20th-century sherds).
14 Number of unclassified Sherds.

Hongshan Decoration

15 Number of Hongshan sherds with incised horizontal Z motif.
16 Number of Hongshan sherds with incised vertical Z motif.
17 Number of Hongshan sherds with other incised motifs.

The first line of the ASCII text file CERAMHH.TXT, for example, looks like this:

This means that the line contains data for Household Unit 001. There were 1387 sherds, of which 1338 were Hongshan, 7 were Xiaoheyan, 31 were Liao vessels, 3 were Liao tiles, and 8 were modern. The Hongshan sherds included 21 "Other" incised motifs; 14 had painted decoration; and 1303 were undecorated. None were slipped, burnished, or had mat impressions. 1333 were orange ware; 2 were brown ware; 2 were gray ware; and 1 was yellow-brown ware. 2 were coarse paste, and 1336 were fine paste. 1 was a guan; 1 was a bo; 81 were tongxingqi; and 1255 were indeterminate forms.

The last, or 50th line of the ASCII text file CERAMHH.TXT is:

This means that the line contains data for Household Unit 210. There were 600 sherds, of which 399 were Hongshan, 184 were Xiaoheyan, 2 were Lower Xiajiadian, 1 was a Zhanguo-Han vessel, 1 was a Liao vessel, and 13 were modern. 1 had an incised horizontal Z motif, 1 had an incised "other" motif, 1 had painted decoration, and 396 were undecorated. 1 was slipped, none were burnished, and none had mat impressions. 285 were orange ware; 186 were brown ware; 2 were gray ware; and 4 were yellow-brown ware. 163 were coarse paste and 236 were fine paste. 8 were guan; 1 was a pen; 1 was a tongxingqi; and 389 were indeterminate forms.
