Surface Diagnostic Ceramics

The data files SURFDIAGNOSTICS.TXT and SURFDIAGNOSTICS.XLS provide ceramic information for diagnostic sherds gathered through surface collections at the Yahuay Alta Community. The data corresponds to Table B.6. (pp. 465) of the dissertation associated with this dataset. The codification values for each of the fields can be found in pages 433-434 (Table B.5.) of the dissertation, or may be downloaded as a PDF here. Detailed explanations for paste and vessel types can be found in Appendix A (pp. 377-410). SURFDIAGNOSTICS.TXT is an ASCII text file; SURFDIAGNOSTICS.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line represents one sherd. There are 368 lines in the text file, each with 22 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

1

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

YA06-1-,001-001,#,1,F,1,5.2,1,x,5,-,x,-,-,4,5.97,1.90,9,7.5 YR 6/6,7.5 YR 6/4,4,4,1,1,0

This indicates that the specimen number is YA06-1-001-001#1. It was collected Sector F, Unit 1. It weighs 5.2 g, and is a bowl. The rim was present, and was pointed in form. The neck was not present, the vessel body was present, the vessel base was not present, and the vessel handle was not present. It was composed of Huaracane Fino paste, had a body thickness of 5.97mm, a rim thickness of 1.90mm, and a rim diameter of 9cm. The exterior color was 7.5 YR 6/6, the interior color was 7.5 YR 6/4, and the surface treatment for both interior and exterior was burnished. The interior and exterior of the vessel both lacked slip and decoration.

The last, or 368th, line of the ASCII text file is:

YA06-1-,138-001,#,2,A,138,3.5,2,x,2,-,x,-,-,1,7.55,6.29,-,7.5 YR 5/4,7.5 YR 5/6,2,2,2,1,0

This indicates that the specimen number is YA06-1-138-001#2. It was collected Sector A, Unit 138. It weighs 3.5 g, and is an olla sin cuello. The rim was present, and was slightly rounded in form. The neck was not present, the vessel body was present, the vessel base was not present, and the vessel handle was not present. It was composed of Huaracane Vegetal paste, had a body thickness of 7.55mm, a rim thickness of 6.29mm, and no recorded rim diameter. The exterior color was 7.5 YR 5/4, the interior color was 7.5 YR 5/6, and the surface treatment for both interior and exterior was roughly smoothed.
