Excavation Diagnostic Ceramics

The data files EXDIAGNOSTICS.TXT and EXDIAGNOSTICS.XLS provide information about diagnostic ceramic sherds gathered through excavations at the Yahuay Alta community. EXDIAGNOSTICS.TXT is an ASCII text file; EXDIAGNOSTICS.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. The data corresponds to Table C.3. (pp. 539) of the dissertation associated with this dataset. The codification values for each of the fields can be found in pages 433-434 of the dissertation from which this dataset is derived, or may be downloaded as a .PDF here. Detailed explanations for paste and vessel types can be found in Appendix A (pp. 377-410). Each line represents one ceramic specimen. There are 259 lines in the text file, each with 28 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

1

First part of Specimen Number

2

Second part of Specimen Number

3

Third part of Specimen Number

4

Fourth part of Specimen Number

6

7

Unit. Refers to an excavation unit. Detailed descriptions of Units 1, 2, and 4 can be found on pp. 171-172. Detailed descriptions of Units 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 can be found on pp. 210-212.

8

Area. The largest subdivision of Units; areas were defined by natural differentiated sections of a unit.

9

Layer. Refers to the natural stratigraphic layers found in each individual unit. Detailed descriptions of the stratigraphy of each unit can be found for Units 1, 2, and 4 on pp. 172-174 and for Units 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 on pp. 212-215.

10

Quad. The smallest individual subdivision of Units. Quads consisted of 1x1 meter squares that formed a grid over each unit. These grids were numbered sequentially from left to right and from top to bottom, so Quad 1 was always the most northwesternly of the unit. The location of each Quad can be seen in the individual drawings of each unit, Figs. 5.2, 5.4, 5.6, 6.2, 6.5, 6.7, 6.9, and 6.11.

11

Rasgo (Feature). Refers to individual features found in each Unit. These features are quite variable in size and shape. Descriptions of individual Rasgos can be found throughout Chapters 5 and 6 and on the individual drawings of each unit, Figs. 5.2, 5.4, 5.6, 6.2, 6.5, 6.7, 6.9, and 6.11.

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

YA06-2-02-009-001#1,F,2,-,S,9,-,0.8,7,x,1,x,-,-,-,3,3.46,2.69,3,1,1,1,1,0,

This indicates that the data pertains to specimen number YA06-2-02-009-001#1. It was collected Sector F, Unit 2, Layer S, Quad 9. No Area or Rasgo are associated with this specimen. It weighs 0.8 g, and is a bottle. The rim was present, and was slightly rounded in form. The neck was present, the vessel body was not present, the vessel base was not present, and the vessel handle was not present. It was composed of paste type 3 (Huaracane Arena Gruesa), had a body thickness of 3.46 mm, a rim thickness of 2.69 mm, and a rim diameter of 3 cm. Neither the interior nor exerior surface was treated or slipped. The vessel lacked decoration.

The last, or 259th, line of the ASCII text file is:

YA06-2-08-050-013#1,A,8,B,C,50,13,6.9,1,x,2,-,x,-,-,5,5.17,4.44,-,4,4,3,3,0,

This indicates that the data pertains to specimen number YA06-2-08-050-013#1. It was collected Sector A, Unit 8, Area B, Layer C, Quad 50, Rasgo 13. It weighs 6.9 g, and is an bowl. The rim was present, and was slightly rounded in form. The neck was not present, the vessel body was present, the vessel base was not present, and the vessel handle was not present. It was composed of paste type 5 (Huaracane Fino Negro), had a body thickness of 5.17 mm, a rim thickness of 4.44 mm, and no recorded rim diameter. The surface treatment for both interior and exterior was burnished. The exterior and interior of the vessel were slipped and the vessel lacked decoration.
