Ceramic Types

The data files TYPE.TXT and TYPE.XLS contain counts of all the sherds from excavations at El Venado, classified according to ceramic type. TYPE.TXT is an ASCII text file; TYPE.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line represents one excavated context (for example, a level in a 1 meter square). There are 799 lines in the text file, each with 37 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

1 Test pit number
2 Tomb number
3 Feature number
4 East-west coordinate (for a test pit, the southwest corner; for a tomb, the center; for a feature, the center)
5 North-south coordinate (for a test pit, the southwest corner; for a tomb, the center; for a feature, the center)
6 Depth below surface (m) of the upper extreme
7 Depth below surface (m) of the lower extreme
8 Level number
9 Number of sherds of Mosquera Incised Red
10 Number of sherds of Mosquera Crushed Rock
11 Number of sherds of Zipaquirá Red on White
12 Number of sherds of Zipaquirá Sherd Tempered
13 Number of sherds of Zipaquirá Crushed Sherd Tempered - Red Slip Variant
14 Number of sherds of Tunja Fine Incised
15 Number of sherds of Tunja Coarse Brown
16 Number of sherds of Coarse Sandy
17 Number of sherds of Fine Sandy

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

This indicates that the data pertain to no numbered test pit, but rather to Tomb 6 and to no numbered feature. The coordenate location is 573.0 East-west and 273.0 North-south. There are no measurements for the depth below surface of the upper or lower extremes. There is no level number corresponding to this unit. The context produced no sherds of Mosquera Incised Red, Mosquera Crushed Rock, Zipaquirá Red on White, Zipaquirá Sherd Tempered, Zipaquirá Crushed Sherd Tempered - Red Slip Variant, Tunja Fine Incised, or Tunja Coarse Brown. There was 1 sherd of Coarse Sandy and 1 of Fine Sandy. There were 26 sherds of Grey Tempered and 5 of Orange Burnished. There were no sherds of Fine Orange, Valle de Tenza Gray, Guatavita Sherd Tempered, exotic but unknown provenance, unidentified ware, Ráquira Dragged Temper, Ground Rock, fine ware, glazed ware, Lenticular Fine Lime, brick, modern China, roof tile, floor tile, or glass. The total number of sherds was 33; the context dates to the Late Muisca period; and it is assigned to residential unit LM-20.

The last, or 799th, line of the ASCII text file is:

This indicates that the context is in test pit 74, not in a numbered tomb or feature. The coordinate location is 684.0 East-west and 619.0 North-south. The upper extreme of the context was at 0.20 m below surface, and the lower extreme was at 0.30 m below surface. The context is Level 3. There were no sherds of Mosquera Incised Red, Mosquera Crushed Rock, Zipaquirá Red on White, Zipaquirá Sherd Tempered, Zipaquirá Crushed Sherd Tempered - Red Slip Variant, Tunja Fine Incised, Tunja Coarse Brown, Coarse Sandy, Fine Sandy, Grey Tempered, Orange Burnished, Fine Orange, Valle de Tenza Gray, Guatavita Sherd Tempered, exotic but unknown provenance, or unidentified ware. There were 3 sherds of Ráquira Dragged Temper, but none of Ground Rock, fine ware, glazed ware, Lenticular Fine Lime, brick, modern China, roof tile, floor tile, or glass. The total number of sherds was 3; the context dates to the Colonial period; and it is assigned to no residential unit.
