Collection Data

The data files COLLECTIONDATA.TXT and COLLECTIONDATA.XLS contain data on the size, type, and contents of each collection carried out within the Zhangwu survey. COLLECTIONDATA.TXT is an ASCII text file, and COLLECTIONDATA.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line represents one collection lot. There are 2316 lines in the text file, each with 40 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

1

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

A001,,,,,,,,,5,,,,1,general collection,0,0,0,0,5,1628,0,0,0,0,0.25,0,,,,,,,,,,,,,

This indicates that the data pertain to collection lot A001, where only 5 Liao sherds were recovered. For that lot, there was only one collection carried out and it was a general collection. Since this is a general collection, a Liao density of .25 sherds per square meter was given to the 1628 m² area that this collection represents. No lithic artifacts of any type were recovered.

The last, or 2316th, line of the ASCII text file is:

D240,,,,,,,,,1,,,,1,general collection,0,0,0,0,1,1693,0,0,0,0,0.25,0,,,,,,,,,,,,,

This indicates that the data pertain to collection lot D240, where only 1 Liao sherd was recovered. For that lot, there was only one collection carried out and it was a general collection. Since this is a general collection, a Liao density of .25 sherds per square meter was given to the 1693 m² area that this collection represents. No lithic artifacts of any type were recovered.
