Yuxi Valley Settlement Dataset

Collection Unit Information and Ceramic Inventory

The data files CERAMICS.TXT and CERAMICS.XLS contain information about each surface collection unit, including ceramic densities and counts by period and form. CERAMICS.TXT is an ASCII text file, and CERAMICS.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line of the ASCII file represents one collection unit. There are 1598 lines, each with 16 variables separated by commas. These 16 variables are, in the following order:

1 Sequence Number: The unique alphanumeric code assigned to each collection unit in the data analysis.
2 Collection unit number: The number used in the Yuxi valley survey that represent each collection unit. Begins with six digits indicating the date when the collection unit was made; followed by two or three letters representing the site where the specific collection unit is located; the last letter indicates the survey team that recorded the unit, followed by a three-digit number.
3 Collection unit size m2.
4 Actual collected area m2: For some collection units, actual collected area is smaller than the collection unit size. The reasons were discussed in Chapter 2 of the dissertation associated with this dataset.
5 Lingjiatan sherd counts.
6 Post-Lingjiatan sherd counts.
7 Zhou sherd counts.
8 Land type:
  • A=Paddy field
  • B=Hilly wheat fields with young crops
  • C=Barren land with dry grass
9 Correction factor: Different land types generate different surface visibility. Correction factors were assigned to each land type to help adjusting the final sherd density.
  • A=1.6
  • B=1
  • C=1.7
10 Lingjiatan sherd density after correction (per square meter).
11 Post-Lingjiatan sherd density after correction (per square meter).
12 Zhou sherd density after correction (per square meter).
13 Lingjiatan fine-paste sherd counts.
14 Lingjiatan smoothed, burnished or slipped (SBS) sherd counts
15 Lingjiatan cooking-vessel sherd counts.
16 Lingjiatan serving-vessel sherd counts.
17 Additional Notes, if necessary, were recorded for the collection unit.

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

1,081212HLA006,1,1,2,0,0,B,1,2,0,0,1,2,0,2

This means that the data belong to collection unit 081212HLA006, with assigned sequence number 1. The total area of the collection unit was 1 square meters, and the actual collected area of this collection was also 1 square meters. This collection yielded a total of 2 Lingjiatan sherd, 0 Post-Lingjiatan sherd, and 0 Zhou sherd. The land type of the collection unit belongs to B, that is, hilly wheat fields with young crops. The correction factor for this type of land is 1, which means the final sherd density was adjusted by multiplying 1. The Lingjiatan sherd density per square meter is 2. The Post-Lingjiatan sherd density per square meter is 0. The Zhou sherd density per square meter is 0. There was a total of 1 Lingjiatan fine-paste sherds, 2 Lingjiatan SBS sherds, 0 Lingjiatan serving-vessel sherds, and 2 Lingjiatan cooking-vessel sherds. There are no addition notes for this collection.

The last, or 1598th line of the ASCII text file is:

1600,110117X,100,100,3,8,1,C,1.7,0.051,0.136,0.017,3,0,0,0

This means that the data belong to collection unit 110117X, with assigned sequence number 1600. The total area of the collection unit was 100 square meters, and the actual collected area of this collection was also 100 square meters. This collection yielded a total of 3 Lingjiatan sherd, 8 Post-Lingjiatan sherd, and 1 Zhou sherd. The land type of the collection unit belongs to C, that is, barren land with dry grass. The correction factor for this type of land is 1.7, which means the final sherd density was adjusted by multiplying 1.7. The Lingjiatan sherd density per square meter is 0.051. The Post-Lingjiatan sherd density per square meter is 0.136. The Zhou sherd density per square meter is 0.017. There was a total of 3 Lingjiatan fine-paste sherds, 0 Lingjiatan SBS sherds, 0 Lingjiatan serving-vessel sherds, and 0 Lingjiatan cooking-vessel sherds. There are no addition notes for this collection.
