The data files GARBAGE.TXT and GARBAGE.XLS contain data on the distribution of garbage around recent houses in Boyacá discussed in Chapter 3.2 and represented in Figures 3.29, 3.30, and 3.31. The study was carried out by Ana María Boada. GARBAGE.TXT is an ASCII text file; GARBAGE.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line represents one transect walked outward from a house. There are 179 lines in the text file, each with 5 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:
1 | Distance: The distance (in meters) to the farthest item of garbage along the transect |
2 | Material: The material of which the farthest item of garbage consisted |
3 | House: The number of the house to which the transect corresponds |
4 | Area: The area (in square meters) of the ellipse in Figure 3.30 that approximates the distribution of garbage around the house |
5 | Years: The estimated length of time the house was occupied |
The first line of the file, for example, looks like this:
11.50,Ceramics,H01,1682, -
This indicates that the transect represented by this line was 11.50 m long to the most distant item of garbage, and that the most distant item of garbage was of ceramics. The transect pertains to House 1, a house whose estimated area of garbage distribution was 1682 m2 and whose period of occupation is unknown.
The last (179th) line of the file is:
21.90,Plastic,H10,4830,100
This indicates that the transect represented by this line was 21.90 m long to the most distant item of garbage, and that the most distant item of garbage was of plastic. The transect pertains to House 10, a house whose estimated area of garbage distribution was 4830 m2 and whose period of occupation is estimated at 100 years.
