Ceramic Inventory

The data files CERAMICS.TXT and CERAMICS.XLS provide ceramic counts broken down by type for all ceramic material recovered during survey. CERAMICS.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file; CERAMICS.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the ASCII file represents one survey collection unit (either a surface collection or a shovel test pit). There are 1140 lines, each with 25 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:

6 Early Period: Number of ceramics sherds tempered with organic materials.
7 Middle Period: Number of ceramics sherds tempered with Kaolin
8 Middle Period: Period: Number of ceramics sherds tempered with crushed stone
9 Late Period: Period: Number of ceramics sherds tempered with sediments
10 Late Period: Period: Number of ceramics sherds tempered with laterites
11 Late Period: Period: Number of ceramics sherds tempered with oxides
12 Late period: Period: Number of ceramics sherds tempered with crushed sherds
13 Total Number of ceramics collected. Summarizes the sum of the total number of sherds of the different temper materials by each shovel prove.
14 Surface treatment: Number of Early Period Sherds with slip surface.
15 Surface treatment: Number of Middle Period Sherds with slip surface.
16 Surface treatment: Number of Late Period Sherds with slip surface.
17 Surface treatment: Number of Early Period Sherds with painted surface.
18 Surface treatment: Number of Middle Period Sherds with painted surface.
19 Surface treatment: Number of Late Period Sherds with painted surface.
20 Surface treatment: Number of Early Period Sherds with slip-painted surface.
21 Surface treatment: Number of Middle Period Sherds with slip-painted surface.
22 Surface treatment: Number of Late Period Sherds with slip-painted surface.
23 Surface treatment: Number of Early Period Sherds with modeled surface.
24 Surface treatment: Number of Middle Period Sherds with modeled surface.
25 Surface treatment: Number of Late Period Sherds with modeled surface.

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

CATANGA (CA-CT),CA-CT-LT-01,0.41,CA-SP-01,CA-CT-PS-01,0,10,0,13,10,12,0,45,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,1

This means that the ceramics belong to the Catanga site designated shorthand as CA-CT. At that specific site, the ceramics belong to CA-CT-LT-01 (Lot 1), with an area of 0.41 hectares. The shovel probe number was CA-SP-01, and the envelope code was CA-CT-PS-01. The ceramics at the site were first sorted by chronology. At this particular shovel prove from the Lot 1 in the Catanga Site, 0 of the artifacts found were tempered with organic ceramics from the Early period, 10 were tempered with kaolin ceramics from the Middle period. 0 were tempered with crushed stone from the Middle period, 13 were tempered with sediments from the Late period, 10 were tempered with laterites from the Late period, 12 were tempered with oxides from the Late period, and 0 were tempered with crushed sherds from the Late period. A total of 45 sherds were recovered from this site in total. The sherds were also categorized by surface treatment where applicable. 0 Early period sherds were treated with the slip technique, 0 Middle period sherds were treated with the slip technique and 0 Late period sherds were treated with the slip technique. 0 Early period sherds were treated with the painted technique, 0 Middle period sherds were treated with the painted technique, and 0 Late period sherds were were treated with the painted technique. 0 Early period sherds were treated with the slip-painting technique, 0 Middle period sherds were treated with the slip-painting technique, and 0 Late period sherds were treated with the slip-painting technique. 0 Early period sherds were treated with the modeled technique, 0 Middle period sherds treated with the modeled technique, and 1 Late period sherd treated with the modeled technique.
