Spindle Whorl and Bead Inventory

The data files SWBEADS.TXT and SWBEADS.XLS contain measurements of the spindle whorls and beads recovered during excavations and surface collections at El Dornajo. SWBEADS.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file. SWBEADS.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the comma delimited file represents one artifact. There are 27 lines, each with 13 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

1 Unit: A 1 x 1 m test pit or a 2 m diameter surface collection; see maps on pages 41 and 42 of the dissertation.
2 Stratum: A natural or cultural layer distinguishable from others by its soil characteristics. A code of “surface" identifies a surface collection.
3 Level: Arbitrary levels within stata of 10 cm (or less when a stratum change was encountered). A code of "na" indicates either that the unit was a surface collection or that the strata in the unit were not excavated in levels.
4 A description and/or number of any feature that is contained in or associated with this unit. A code of "na" means no feature was associated with the unit.
5 Object type
6 The material the object is made of (i.e. stone, shell, ceramic).
7 Weight (g)
8 Diameter (mm). Blank cells mean that data was not available because the object was broken
9 Diameter of hole (mm). The diameter of the hole in the middle of either the spindle whorl or the bead. A blank cell means the data was not available because the object was broken.
10 Length (mm). Measured only for non-spherical (oblong) beads. Empty cells in this variable should be read as not applicable.
11 Thickness (mm). Measured only for small, circular, flat beads. Empty cells in this variable should be read as not applicable.
12 Height (mm). Refers to spherically shaped beads and spindle whorls. It measures the long axis. Empty cells in this variable should be read as not applicable.
13 Decoration such as engraving or polishing.

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, is:

7,A,3,na,bead,green stone,13,15,4,31,,,none

This indicates that the artifact belongs to Unit 7, Stratum A, Level 3. There is no feature associated with this artifact. It is a bead made of green stone, and weighs 13 grams. It has a diameter of 15 mm with a hole 4 mm in diameter. It has a length of 31 mm, but no thickness or height dimensions are specified. No decoration is present.

The last, or 27th, line of the ASCII text file is:

49,G,2,Burial 18,bead,emerald,1,11,3,,,5,none

This indicates that the artifact belongs to Unit 49, Stratum G, Level 2. It is associated with the feature "Burial 18." It is a bead made of emerald, and weighs 1 gram. It has a diameter of 11 mm with a hole 3 mm in diameter. The length is not specified and neither is the thickness, but the height is 5 mm. No decoration is present.
