Faunal Inventory

The data files FAUNA.TXT and FAUNA.XLS provide the quantities of each element type for different faunal taxa at each context of El Dornajo. FAUNA.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file. FAUNA.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the comma delimited file provides the number of specimens (NISP) of a given element of a given taxon in a given context (unit, stratum, and level). There are 824 lines, each with 11 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

1 Unit: A 1 x 1 m test pit or a 2 m diameter surface collection; see maps on pages 41 and 42 of the dissertation.
2 Stratum: A natural or cultural layer distinguishable from others by its soil characteristics. A code of “surface" identifies a surface collection.
3 Level: Arbitrary levels within stata of 10 cm (or less when a stratum change was encountered). A code of "na" indicates either that the unit was a surface collection or that the strata in the unit were not excavated in levels.
4 A description and/or number of any feature that is contained in or associated with this unit. A code of "na" means no feature was associated with the unit.
5 Class
6 Family
7 Other Taxon
8 Element code (PDF list of code denominations)
9 NISP of the element
10 Element side (when applicable and available):
R=right
L=left
A code of "na" means that either this variable is not applicable or the element was indeterminate as to side.
11 Weight (g)

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, is:

1,A,1,na,Mammalia,unidentified,unidentified,9007,1,na,1

This indicates that the faunal material comes from Unit 1, Stratum A, Level 1. There is no feature associated with this faunal material. The class is Mammalia, but the family and other taxon are unidentified. The element code is 9007, which corresponds to an undetermined diaphysis. The NISP (number of specimens present) of this element is 1. There is no side specification for this faunal material, which weighs 1 gram.

The last, or 824th, line of the ASCII text file is:

Tola Unit 3,I,1,na,Mammalia,unidentified,Rodentia,1300,1,L,0.1

This indicates that the faunal material comes from Tola Unit 3, Stratum I, Level 1. There is no feature associated with this faunal material. The class is Mammalia, the family is unidentified, but the specimen belongs to the order Rodentia. The element code is 1300, which corresponds to a femur. The NISP (number of specimens present) of this element is 1. The side specification is left, and the weight is 1 gram.
