Ceramic Inventory

The data files CERAMICS.TXT and CERAMICS.XLS provide total ceramic counts for each context registered through excavations and surface collections at El Dornajo. CERAMICS.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file, CERAMICS.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the comma delimited file represents one context. There are 273 lines, each with 7 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

1 Unit: A 1 x 1 m test pit or a 2 m diameter surface collection; see maps on pages 41 and 42 of the dissertation.
2 Stratum: A natural or cultural layer distinguishable from others by its soil characteristics. A code of “surface" identifies a surface collection.
3 Level: Arbitrary levels within stata of 10 cm (or less when a stratum change was encountered). A code of "na" indicates either that the unit was a surface collection or that the strata in the unit were not excavated in levels.
4 A description and/or number of any feature that is contained in or associated with this unit. A code of "na" means no feature was associated with the unit.
5 Number of non-diagnostic sherds.
6 Number of diagnostic sherds. Diagnostic sherds include all rims, handles, and bases allowing vessel form to be determined; as well as all painted, incised sherds, or otherwise decorated sherds.
7 Total number of sherds (the sum of 5 + 6).

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, is:

1,A,1,na,17,3,20

This indicates that the sherds pertain to Unit 1, Stratum A, Level 1. No feature is associated with this context. There are 17 non-diagnostic and 3 diagnostic sherds, for a total of 20 sherds.

The last, or 273rd line of the ASCII text file is:

Near Unit 27,surface,na,na,0,15,15

This indicates that the sherds were collected from near Unit 27 from the surface, hence the level designation is not applicable. No feature is associated with this context. There are 0 non-diagnostic and 15 diagnostic sherds, for a total of 15 sherds.
