Malacological (Mollusca) Inventory

The files MOLLUSKS.TXT and MOLLUSKS.XLS provide the MNI of each specie within each excavated context at the various Vegas sites. MOLLUSKS.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file; MOLLUSKS.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the ASCII file represents one excavation context. There are 353 lines, each with 135 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:

1 Site number
2 Unit number (new context number). See the following PDF for a reconciliation of trench locations to new context numbers. For the location of the original context designations, please refer to Figure 1.5 of the publication associated with this dataset.
3 Chalkiness
0 = not chalky
1 = chalky
2 = very chalky
blank = not recorded
4 Number of Pieces (Including Discarded Anadara)
5 Fragmentation Index: (% fragments) * 1/(average fragment weight)

--For the purposes of estimating the number of Anadara tuberculosa represented by fragments, an average Anadara shell is estimated to weigh 70 g (each valve 35 g). But these numbers are not included in the estimated MNI in variable 27.

This means that the site number is 38, the unit (context) number is 38-4000, which had 463 total pieces of shell. The fragmentation index for the unit is 0.0095. The total MNI of the unit is 38, but it is 139 if we include the discarded Anandara shells. The total weight of all the mollusks within the unit is 1858.9 g. There are 146 pieces of unidentified fragments, which are 31.53% of the total pieces. Their weight is 297.2 g, which is 3.33% of the total weight. There are 52 pieces of Anandara tuberculosa, which are 11.23% of the total pieces. Their weight is 105.8 g, which is 1.18% of the total weight. The total MNI of the unit is 40, it is also 40 if we include the discarded Anandara shells. The total weight of all the mollusks within the unit is 1140.1 g. There are 9 pieces of unidentified fragments, which are 5.66% of the total pieces. Their weight is 28.0 g, which is 2.46% of the total weight.
