Teotihuacan Sun Pyramid Cave Dataset

TE 28 Non-Ceramic Inventory

The files TE28NONCERAMIC.TXT and TE28NONCERAMIC.XLSX provide descriptive information for all non-ceramic artifacts recovered during excavations at TE 28. TE28NONCERAMIC.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file; TE28NONCERAMIC.XLSX contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the ASCII file represents one non-ceramic artifact. There are 131 lines, each with 4 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:

1 Catalog ID. An alphanumeric code to identify each non-ceramic artifact recovered. It is comprised of the Area letter, followed by the Pit (North, South, East or West), followed by the number of either the "Small Find" or "Bag". During excavation virtually all material that had an origin outside the cave was placed into paper bags and logged as either Small Finds (SF) or Bags.
2 Object Number. Identifies the specific non-ceramic object within the Bag or Small Find. Please refer to the "Artifact Photographs" section of this dataset to view images of each artifact recovered using the Catalog ID and Object Number (variables 1 and 2).
3 Description of the non-ceramic artifact.
4 Location of the non-ceramic artifact (including layer number when available).

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

A-N-SF3,1,concrete floor sample,

This means that the object was found in Area A, North pit and was catalogued as Small Find 3. The Object ID is 1, which combined with the Catalog ID defines the label of the object's photo in the "Artifact Photographs" section of this dataset. The object is a sample of the concrete floor, and the Layer is self-identified as concrete floor.

The last, or 131st line of the ASCII text file is:

D-SF11,~,obsidian; missing from the TE 28 collection in 2006,Layer 3b

This means that the object was found in Area D, a single pit, and was catalogued as Small Find 11. No photograph exists. The item is obsidian and was missing from the TE 28 collection in 2006, when Sload took the first inventory. The obsidian comes from Layer 3b (as noted in the Small Find Log at the time of excavation).
