Site Details from Survey

The fundamental unit of analysis for the Fuxin survey data was the collection unit, not the "site." Contiguous collection units were, however, grouped into sites for convenience in the field in recording a few kinds of information that pertained to multiple collection units.

The data files SURVSITES.TXT and SURVSITES.XLS contain some of this information in tabular form. SURVSITES.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text filel; SURVSITES.XLSX contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line represents one site (and thus one or more collection units). There are 480 lines, each with 17 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

1 Site number—unique name given to each site comprised of numbers and letters. Refer to the survey methods document for description of naming conventions.
2 Team--A single letter designating the survey team that recorded the site
3 Number of collections--The total number of collection units grouped together as this site
4 Collections--a list of the of the collection units grouped together to form this site.
5 Mountain top physiographic setting: 1=yes, 0=no
6 Slope physiographic setting: 1=yes, 0=no
7 Terrace physiographic setting: 1=yes, 0=no
8 Floodplain physiographic setting: 1=yes, 0=no
9 Defensive walls visible on surface: 1=yes, 0=no
10 Defensive ditches visible on surface: 1=yes, 0=no
11 Internal walls visible on surface: 1=yes, 0=no
12 Stone circles visible on surface: 1=yes, 0=no
13 Stone piles visible on surface: 1=yes, 0=no
14 Burned earth visible on surface: 1=yes, 0=no
15 Slab graves visible on surface: 1=yes, 0=no
16 Stratigraphy visible on surface: 1=yes, 0=no
17 Other features visible on surface: 1=yes, 0=no

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

106B01,B,1,13B2050,0,0,0,1,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0

This means that the site number is 106 and it was recorded by team B. The site is composed of 1 collection unit, which is unit 13B2050. It is not on a mountain top, slope or terrace but it is on a floodplain. It does not have visible defensive walls or ditches, and there are no internal walls visible. The site also does not have visible stone circles or piles, burned earth, slab graves ore visible stratigraphy.

The last, or 408th line of the ASCII text file is:

97D01,D,1,13D4136,0,1,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0

This means that the site name is 97D01, and it was recorded by team D. The site is composed of 1 collection unit, which is unit number 13D4136. It is not on a mountain top but on a slope. It is not on a terrace or floodplain and does not have visible defensive walls or ditches. There are no internal walls visible. The site also does not have visible stone circles or piles, burned earth, slab graves or visible stratigraphy.
