The data files SURVLITHICS.TXT and SURVLITHICS.XLS contain data on all lithic artifacts collected during survey. SURVLITHICS.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file; SURVLITHICS.XLSX contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the ASCII file corresponds to one lithic artifact. Collection units that yielded more than one lithic artifact, thus, have more than one line. Collection units that yielded no lithic artifacts do not appear at all. There are 1,308 lines, each with 26 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:
1 | Collection--the name of the collection unit from which lithics where collected. Refer to the Field Methods document for description of naming conventions. |
2 | Item ID—an identifier for each lithic item: the collection number\running number of items from the same collection. |
3 | Period 1--The primary period associated with collected pottery from the same unit |
4 | Period 2—a secondary period associated with collected pottery from the same unit |
5 | Type—primary classification of item: flaked item, GST, biface, etc. |
6 | Subtype—classification of item within reduction sequence: flake, tool, blade, etc. |
7 | Raw material—the type of stone the item is made on |
8 | Colour—visual observations on the item’s colour pattern |
9 | Texture—visual observations of the stone matrix. |
10 | Location of polish on item, if present. |
11 | Location of use-wear on item, if present |
12 | Cortex (%)—percentage of the item covered by cortex |
13 | Typological classification, if item is tool |
14 | Broken/complete—Item’s state of preservation. |
15 | Typological classification of retouch, if present |
16 | Typological classification of core, if applicable |
17 | Core aim—the type of flakes the core was used for, if applicable |
18 | Core shape classification |
19 | The length of the item, in mm |
20 | The width of the item, in mm |
21 | The thickness of the item, in mm |
22 | The pattern of flaking scars |
23 | The number of flaking scars |
24 | Classification of striking platform |
25 | Item allotted for drawing |
26 | Remarks—additional observations |
The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:
12A1103,12A1103\1,GTS,,Flaked Item, Primary element,Agate,Reddish, Fine grained,,,30,, Complete,,,,,25,31,8,Simple,2,Simple,,
This means that the artifact belongs to the survey collection unit 12A1103 and its ID number is 12A1103\1. The item is assigned to the Gaotaishan period, with no secondary period assignment. It is a flaked item and a primary element, made on agate of a reddish color with a fine grained matrix. There is no polish or use-wear on the item and 30% of its surface is covered in cortex. As the item is a flake, no tool type is designated. The item was presereved in its complete shape. Retouch type, core type, core aim and core shape are not applicable. The length, width, and thickness of the item are 25, 31 and 8 mm, respectively. The scar pattern is simple, with 2 flaking scars. The striking platform is simple. The item was not allotted for drawing and not additional remarks were given.
The last, or 1,308th line of the ASCII text file is:
12D4206,12D4206/9,GTS ,,flaked item, core,opel,translusent, fine grained,,,5,,broken ,,single platforme, bladlets,oval,,12,7, simple, 10,crushed,,
This means that the artifact belongs to the survey collection unit 12D4206 and its ID number is 12D4206/9. The item is assigned to the GSaotaishan period, with no secondary period assignment. It is a flaked item and a core, made on opal of a translucent color with a fine grained matrix. There is no polish or use-wear on the item and 5% of its surface is covered in cortex. As the item is a core, no tool type is designated. The item is broken and did not preserve its complete original shape. The retouch type is not applicable. It is a single platform core aimed at bladelet production. The core is oval shaped. The length was left blank, but the width and thickness 12 and 7 mm, respectively. The scar pattern is simple, with 10 flaking scars. The striking platform is crushed. The item was not allotted for drawing and not additional remarks were given.
