The data files EXCERAM_12D56.TXT and EXCERAM_12D56.XLS provide sherd counts by period from excavation area 12D56 (sherds from Xiaohexi and Xinglongwa periods are additionally broken down by decoration type, vessel form, and temper). EXCERAM_12D56.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file; EXCERAM_12D56.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the ASCII file represents the contents of one basket within a given excavation unit. There are 159 lines, each with 38 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

This means that the basket number is 1000 from unit A1000, which produced 11 sherds in total, one modern and 10 Xiaohexi sherds.
The last, or 159th line of the ASCII text file is:
1157,General,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0
This means that the basket number is 1157 from a general collection, which did not produce sherds of any kind.
