The data files EXCERAM_12D16.TXT and EXCERAM_12D16.XLS provide sherd counts by period from excavation area 12D16 (sherds from Xiaohexi and Xinglongwa periods are additionally broken down by decoration type, vessel form, and temper). EXCERAM_12D16.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file; EXCERAM_12D16.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the ASCII file represents the contents of one basket within a given excavation unit. There are 462 lines, each with 38 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

This means that the basket number is 1000 from unit A1000, which did not produce sherds of any kind.
The last, or 462nd line of the ASCII text file is:
9314,I949B,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0
This means that the basket number is 9314 from unit I949B, which did not produce sherds of any kind.
