Volcán Barú Dataset |
The file TESTS.TXT contains data on all shovel tests excavated during the Volcán Barú project. It is available as a comma-delimited ASCII text file (and as an Excel spreadsheet, TESTS.XLS). Each line represents one shovel test. There are 771 lines in the text file, each containing the values for 28 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

3 | UTM Easting coordinate (in Zone 17 North). Based on the NAD27 datum. |

7 | Depth, in centimeters, of the shovel test (50 cm diameter on surface). |
8 | Number of sherds. |
9 | Number of lithics. |
10 | Number of unidentifiable sherds (excluded from other counts). |
11 | Number of Early Bugaba Phase sherds. |
12 | Number of Late Bugaba Phase sherds. |
13 | Number of undecorated sherds. |
14 | Number of decorated sherds. |
15 | Number of Zoned Bichrome sherds. |
16 | Number of Bugaba Engraved sherds. |
17 | Number of rim or base fragments. |
18 | Number of identifiable cooking vessel fragments. |
19 | Number of identifiable serving vessel fragments. |
20 | Number of andesite stone artifacts. |
21 | Number of basalt stone artifacts. |
22 | Number of other stone (i.e. chert, mudstone, petrified wood) artifacts. |
23 | Number of stone tool production artifacts. |
24 | Number of stone tool maintenance artifacts. |
25 | Number of finished stone tool artifacts. |
26 | Number of stone axe artifacts (some of these also count as stone tool production or repair artifacts). |
27 | Number of grinding stones. |
28 | Number of ceramic kiln wasters. |
The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

This indicates that this test belongs to site BU24 (or Barriles), was the first shovel test excavated in the site, occupies an UTM Easting coordinate of 313690 and a UTM Northing coordinate of 971995, had a GPS error of 11.3 meters, contained 12 total artifacts, was excavated to a depth of 100 centimeters, contained 12 sherds, no lithics, 3 unidentified sherds, 7 sherds of Cerro Punta Orange (or generally assignable to the Early Bugaba Phase), no sherds of Valbuena or Plain ware (or generally assignable to the Late Bugaba Phase), 9 undecorated sherds, no decorated sherds, no Zoned Bichrome sherds, no Bugaba Engraved sherds, no rims or bases, no cooking vessel sherds, no serving vessel sherds, no andesite artifacts, no basalt artifacts, no other stone artifacts, no stone production artifacts, no stone maintenance artifacts, no finished stone tools, no stone axes, no grinding stones, and no ceramic kiln wasters.
