Spindle Whorl Analysis Table

The data files SPINDLEWHORL.TXT and SPINDLEWHORL.XLS provide weights and dimensions for each spindle whorl artifact gathered at domestic mounds within the Sauce center and its hinterland. SPINDLEWHORL.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file. SPINDLEWHORL.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the ASCII file represents one artifact. There are 62 lines, each with 18 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

124,3a,Cone,TRUE,buff,fine,U,U,100,5.7,,13.4,,3.3,,,1,1

This means that the spindle whorl fragment came from collection 124. The type is "3a," a graphical depiction of which can be seen in the PDF of Spindle Whorl types. The major type is "Cone." It is molded, the paste color is buff, the paste texture is fine, and there is no decorative technique or motif. It is 100% complete, with a height of 5.7 mm, a diameter of 13.4 mm, and a hole diameter of 3.3 mm. There are no additional comments noted, and the weight of the artifact is 1 g.

The last, or 66th line of the ASCII text file is:

5452,1b,Subdome,TRUE,buff,fine,V (M-C),W-Z?,30,,6,,31.9,,,,3.2,1

This means that the spindle whorl fragment came from collection 5452. The type is "1b," a graphical depiction of which can be seen in the PDF of Spindle Whorl types. The major type is "subdome." It is molded, the paste color is buff, the paste texture is fine, the decorative techniques are mold impressed and chapopote, the decorative motifs might be zoomorphic. It is 30% complete, with an incomplete height of 6 mm, an incomplete diameter of 31.9 mm, and no hole diameter provided. There are no additional comments noted, and the weight of the artifact is 3.2 g.
