Incense Burners Analysis Table

The data files INCENSARIO.TXT and INCENSARIO.XLS provide counts and weights for incensario fragments gathered at each domestic mound within the Sauce center and its hinterland. INCENSARIO.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file. INCENSARIO.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the ASCII file provides the number of incense burner fragments that share the same attributes for any given domestic mound collection. There are 44 lines, each with 7 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:

1 Collection
2 Incensario Type Code (List of code denominations)
3 Vessel Part
4 Vessel Characteristics
5 Comments
6 Weight (g)
7 Count

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

1152,46c,Rim,,finger imprints,24,1

This means that the incense burner fragments came from collection 1152. The incensario type code is 46c which the list of code denominations shows to correspond to "Possible Incense Burner with Conical Appliqué." The vessel part is rim. There are no additional vessel characteristics mentioned, although comments note the presence of "finger imprints." The total weight of fragments of this type (within collection 1152) is 24 grams, and there is only 1 fragment of this type within collection 1152.

The last, or 44th line of the ASCII text file is:

5456,46d,Rim,,"almost looks like face, photo taken",36,1

This means that the incense burner fragments came from collection 5456. The incensario type code is 46d which the list of code denominations shows to correspond to "Possible Incense Burner with Appliqué and Incision." The vessel part is rim. There are no additional vessel characteristics mentioned, although comments note "almost looks like face, photo taken." The total weight of fragments of this type (within collection 5456) is 36 grams, and there is only 1 fragment of this type within collection 5456.
