Chipped Stone Analysis Table

The data files CHIPPED.TXT and CHIPPED.XLS provide counts and weights for chipped stone artifacts (excluding chert) gathered at each domestic mound within the Sauce center and its hinterland. CHIPPED.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file. CHIPPED.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the ASCII file provides the number of chipped stone fragments that share the same attributes for any given domestic mound collection. There are 550 lines, each with 10 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:

1 Collection
2 Chipped Stone Type Code (List of code denominations)
3 Color Code:
1=Clear Grey
2=Black/Dark Grey
3=Green
4=Other
5=Milky Bands on Dark Grey
4 Platform:
0=Not Present
1=Single Facet
2=Multi-Facet
3=Ground
4=Scratched
5=Cortex (also code cortex as present)
6=Other
7=Crushed
5 Cutting Edge Length (cm)
6 Cortex:
1 = Present
7 Retouch:
1 = Present
8 Comments
9 Weight (g)
10 Count

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

1759,3,1,,5.5,,,,1.3,2

This means that the chipped stone artifacts came from collection 1759. The chipped stone type code is 3 which the list of code denominations shows to correspond to "Prismatic Pressure Blades: Medial." The color code is 1 (clear gray). There is no platform type specified. The cutting edge measures 5.5 cm. There is no cortex or retouching present. There are no additional comments mentioned. The total weight of lithic artifacts belonging to this type (within collection 1759) is 1.3 grams. There are a total of 2 artifacts of this type within collection 1759.

The last, or 44th line of the ASCII text file is:

5462,3,1,,2,,,,0.4,2

This means that the chipped stone artifacts came from collection 5462. The chipped stone type code is 3 which the list of code denominations shows to correspond to "Prismatic Pressure Blades: Medial." The color code is 1 (clear gray). There is no platform type specified. The cutting edge measures 2 cm. There is no cortex or retouching present. There are no additional comments mentioned. The total weight of lithic artifacts belonging to this type (within collection 5462) is 0.4 grams. There are a total of 2 artifacts of this type within collection 5462.
