Sauce and its Hinterland Dataset

Ceramic Analysis

The data files CERAMIC.TXT and CERAMIC.XLS provide counts and weights for the ceramic assemblages gathered at each domestic mound within the Sauce center and its hinterland. CERAMIC.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file, CERAMIC.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the ASCII file provides the number of ceramic sherds that share the same ceramic type, vessel part, form, and characteristics for any given domestic mound collection. In this sense, each line is the unique combination of ceramic type, vessel form, and vessel part. There are 2186 lines, each with 9 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:

1 Collection
2 Ceramic ID (List of code denominations)
3 PALM Ceramic Code (List of code denominations)
4 Vessel Part
5 Vessel Type
6 Vessel Characteristics
7 Comments
8 Weight (g)
9 Count

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

1751,221,"42a,c & m PL",N/A,N/A,N/A,Plainware,1694,295

Which means that the artifacts came from collection 1751. The ceramic ID and PALM codes are 221 and "42a,c & m PL" respectively, which the list of code denominations shows to correspond to "fine, medium, and coarse textured plain" ceramics. Since these are plain ceramics, no information on vessel part, type, and characteristics are recorded (hence "N/A" for each of these fields). Comments note that these are plainware. The total weight of sherds falling in this category (within collection 1751) is 1694 grams, and there are a total of 295 sherds that fall into this category (within collection 1751).

The last, or 2186 line of the ASCII text file is:

5462,221,"42a,c & m PL",N/A,N/A,N/A,,650.8,196

Which means that the artifacts came from collection 5462. There are no comments for this category of sherds. The total weight of sherds falling into this category (within collection 5462) is 650.8 grams, and there are a total of 196 sherds that fall into this category (within collection 5462).
