Lithic Inventory from Stratigraphic Excavations

The data files LITHICSTRAT.TXT and LITHICSTRAT.XLS provide a breakdown of different lithic types for every excavation level carried out within the study area. LITHICSTRAT.TXT is an ASCII text file; LITHICSTRAT.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line represents one level within one unit. There are 413 lines in the text file, each with 25 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

Lot label. A unique identifier for each level of an excavated unit.

Total number of lithic fragments identified by form.

Axes

Number of pear-shaped axe fragments

Number of trapezoidal axe fragments

Number of fragments belonging to axes of indeterminate shape

Number of axe flake with polish fragments

Number of axe flake without polish fragments

Points

Number of point fragments that are not trifacial or La Mula period

Number of La Mula period point fragments

Number of trifacial point fragments

Chipped Stone

Number of unmodified chipped stone flake fragments

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

This indicates that the lithics pertain to excavation unit and level 01-01-01. That context yielded no lithics of any kind.

The last, or 413th, line of the ASCII text file is:

99-01-05,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0

This indicates that the lithics pertain to excavation unit and level 99-01-05. That context yielded no lithics of any kind.
