The data files FAUNASURFPROBES.TXT and FAUNASURFPROBES.XLS provide the quantities of faunal material for every surface collection or shovel test probe carried out within the study area. FAUNASURFPROBES.TXT is an ASCII text file; FAUNASURFPROBES.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line corresponds to the specimens of a single taxon in a single surface collection or shovel test probe. The number of lines for a particular surface collection or shovel test probe thus corresponds to the number of different taxa encountered there. There are 67 lines in the text file, each with 8 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

This indicates that the faunal specimens pertain to collection unit 01-K1. In this collection, there was 1 fish fragment. No additional information is provided.
The last, or 67th, line of the ASCII text file is:
99-E3,Large Mammal,1,,,,,Unknown
This indicates that the faunal specimens pertain to collection unit 99-E3. In this collection, there was 1 large mammal fragment. No additional information is provided.
