Machalilla Lithic Inventory

The data files LITHICS.TXT and LITHICS.XLS contain data on the quantities and types of lithics recovered from the 553 collection lots in the Machalilla National Park survey. LITHICS.TXT is an ASCII text file; LITHICS.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line represents one collection lot. There are 553 lines in the text file, each with 30 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

1

Lot Number

2

Total number of flaked and ground stone artifacts

3

Total ground stone artifacts

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

1,2,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,1,,1,2,,,,,,,,0

This indicates that the data pertains to collection lot 1, which contained a total of 2 flaked and ground stone artifacts. Amongst them, there were 0 preforms, 0 flake knifes, 0 blade knifes of materials other than obsidian, 0 blade knifes made of obsidian, 0 side scrapers, 0 end scrapers, 0 puncturing tools, 0 drills, 0 rimmers, 0 burins, 0 burin spalls, 0 small projectile points, 0 large projectile points, 0 undefined projectile points, 0 cores, 0 axes, 1 micro flake, 0 debitage, 1 undefined flaked stone artifact, and so a total of 2 flaked stone artifacts. There were also 0 manos, 0 metates, 0 undefined mano or metates, 0 small river stones, 0 large river stones, 0 large worked stones, 0 other ground stone, and so 0 total ground stone artifacts.

The last, or 553rd, line of the ASCII text file is:

553,1,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,1,1,,,,,,,,0

This indicates that the data pertains to collection lot 553, which contained a total of 1 flaked and ground stone artifacts. Amongst them, there were 0 preforms, 0 flake knifes, 0 blade knifes of materials other than obsidian, 0 blade knifes made of obsidian, 0 side scrapers, 0 end scrapers, 0 puncturing tools, 0 drills, 0 rimmers, 0 burins, 0 burin spalls, 0 small projectile points, 0 large projectile points, 0 undefined projectile points, 0 cores, 0 axes, 0 micro flake, 0 debitage, 1 undefined flaked stone artifact, and so a total of 1 flaked stone artifacts. There were also 0 manos, 0 metates, 0 undefined mano or metates, 0 small river stones, 0 large river stones, 0 large worked stones, 0 other ground stone, and so 0 total ground stone artifacts.
