Portable X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis

The data files XRF.TXT and XRF.XLS provide the results from portable X-Ray Fluorescence Analyses. They provide the Geochemical concentration of 11 major and minor trace elements of 715 sherds selected from 16 households in the Hongshan core zone. XRF.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file; XRF.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the ASCII file corresponds to one sherd. There are 715 lines, each with 18 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:

1 Lab Number. A unique ID for every sherd selected for laboratory analysis.
2 Collection Square. The number of the 5-m square the sherd came from.
3 Household Unit. The number of the household unit the sherd represents.
4 Residential Zone. The name of the residential zone the sherd came from.
S=Sanjia
D=Dongshanzui
E=Erbuchi
5 Period. The time period the sherd was assigned to (Hongshan or Xiaoheyan).
6 Vessel Form. The vessel form the sherd was a part of (if identifiable).

Identifiable vessel forms include: (1) Tongxingqi, or large bottomless painted pottery cylinders (for non-utilitarian purpose); and (2) pen-basin, guan-jar, bo-bowl, weng-urn (for utilitarian use). Sherds whose vessel forms are not identifiable are classified as “indeterminate”.
7 Paste-Vessel Form Group. Categories combining fine and coarse paste with utilitarian and non-utilitarian vessel form groups. The groups defined are:

G1=Tongxingqi, which is fine-paste Hongshan vessel for non-utilitarian use;
G2=Fine-paste Hongshan vessel for utilitarian use;
G3=Coarse-paste Hongshan vessel for utilitarian use; and
G4=Coarse-paste Xiaoheyan vessel for utilitarian use.
8 Ba. Trace amounts of Barium in the sherd (parts per million).
9 Zr. Trace amounts of Zirconium in the sherd (parts per million).
10 Sr. Trace amounts of Strontium in the sherd (parts per million).
11 Rb. Trace amounts of Rubidium in the sherd (parts per million).
12 Zn. Trace amounts of Zinc in the sherd (parts per million).
13 Ni. Trace amounts of Nickel in the sherd (parts per million).
14 Fe. Trace amounts of Iron in sherd the (parts per million).
15 Mn. Trace amounts of Manganese in the sherd (parts per million)
16 Ti. Trace amounts of Titanium in the sherd (parts per million).
17 Ca. Trace amounts of Calcium in the sherd (parts per million).
18 K. Trace amounts of Potassium in the sherd (parts per million).

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

DLH001,0009B,S017,S,Hongshan,Tongxingqi,G1,963.33,332.85,122.01,103.91,81.92,2791.08,44539.96,883.67,2470.17,4248.01,12681.86

This means that the sherd analyzed had a laboratory ID number of DLH001, and came from collection unit 0009B, household unit S017, Sanjia area. It was attributed to the Hongshan Period, to a Tongxingqi vessels type, and to group G1. This sherd had 963.33 ppm Barium, 332.85 ppm Zirconium, 122.01 ppm Strontium, 103.91 ppm Rubidium, 81.92 ppm Zinc, 2791.08 ppm Nickel, 44539.96 ppm Iron, 883.67 ppm Manganese, 2470.17 ppm Titanium, 4248.01 ppm Calcium, and 12681.86 ppm Potassium.

The last, or 715th line of the ASCII text file is:

DLH561,2010B,E208,E,Xiaoheyan,Indeterminate,G4,1241.85,317.20,161.96,84.39,58.39,117.64,39567.34,624.16,2789.49,6702.77,12575.76

This means that the sherd analyzed had a laboratory ID number of DLH561, and came from collection unit 2010B, household unit E208, Erbuchi area. It was attributed to the Xiaoheyan Period, to an indeterminate vessels type, and to group G4. This sherd had 1241.85 ppm Barium, 317.20 ppm Zirconium, 161.96 ppm Strontium, 84.39 ppm Rubidium, 58.39 ppm Zinc, 117.64 ppm Nickel, 39567.34 ppm Iron, 624.16 ppm Manganese, 2789.49 ppm Titanium, 6702.77 ppm Calcium, and 12575.76 ppm Potassium.
