Regional Archaeology
in the Muisca Territory: Fúquene Project Dataset |
The Fúquene Project dataset complements the book Regional Archaeology in the Muisca Territory: A Study of the Fúquene and Susa Valleys by Carl Henrik Langebaek Rueda (available from the University of Pittsburgh Center for Comparative Archaeology). It consists of the detailed data from the regional survey carried out by the Fúquene Project and discussed in full in the printed volume, whose contents are as follows:
- Chapter 1: Archaeological Background
- Chapter 2: Methodological Background
- Chapter 3: Geographical Background
- Chapter 4: The Preceramic and Herrera Periods
- Chapter 5: The Early Muisca Period
- Chapter 6: The Late Muisca Period
- Chapter 7: The Colonial Period
- Appendix 1: Pottery Classification and Chronology
- Appendix 2: Radiocarbon Dates
- Appendix 3: Electronic Access to the Full Dataset
Funding to collect the data presented here was provided by a National Science Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant (Award No. SBR-9114862).

The dataset provides the quantities and types of ceramic materials recovered from survey lots in the form of a comma-delimited text file (ASCII) that can be read directly or easily imported to an application program such as a database manager or statistics package.
Ceramic Inventory: Number of sherds of each ceramic type in each survey collection lot (see Chapter 2). |
Additionally, locational information and supplementary maps are provided as AutoCAD .DXF (ASCII) files .
Topographic information for the Fúquene project area is provided in the file TOPO.DXF in the form of a contour map (see Langebaek 1995a, Fig. 2.6). This AutoCAD map contains 14 layers of data. A low-resolution map is also available for rapid on-line review. | Geological information is provided in the file GEOL.DXF (see Langebaek 1995a, Fig. 3.1). This AutoCAD map contains four layers of data. A low-resolution map is also available for rapid on-line review. |
The locations of the soilscapes are provided in the file SOILSCAP.DXF (see Langebaek 1995a, Fig. 3.3). This AutoCAD map contains four layers of data. A low-resolution map is also available for rapid on-line review. | The locations of the soil categories are provided in the file SOILCAT.DXF (see Langebaek 1995a, Fig. 3.4). This AutoCAD map contains four layers of data. A low-resolution map is also available for rapid on-line review. |
The grid system according to which parts of the Fúquene analysis were carried out is provided in the file GRID.DXF (see Langebaek 1995a, Fig. 2.7). This AutoCAD map contains four layers of data. A low-resolution map is also available for rapid on-line review. | Locations of all of the collection lots by number are provided in the AutoCAD file LOTS.DXF (see Langebaek 1995a, Fig. A1.1). Each collection lot is an AutoCAD block. The name of the block is the collection lot number (corresponding to the numbers of the collection lots in the ceramics data file CERAM.TXT). Site numbers (defined as groups of contiguous collection lots) are also provided. A low-resolution map is also available for rapid on-line review. |
HERRERA.DXF is an AutoCAD map that provides the locations of all collection lots with ceramics of the Herrera Period (see Langebaek 1995a, Fig. 4.2). Collection lot site numbers are not included. A low-resolution version of this map is also available for rapid on-line review. | EMUISCA.DXF is an AutoCAD map that provides the locations of all collection lots with ceramics of the Early Muisca Period (see Langebaek 1995a, Fig. 5.1). Collection lot site numbers are not included. A low-resolution version of this map is also available for rapid on-line review. |
LMUISCA.DXF is an AutoCAD map that provides the locations of all collection lots with ceramics of the Late Muisca Period (see Langebaek 1995a, Fig. 6.1). Collection lot site numbers are not included. A low-resolution version of this map is also available for rapid on-line review. | COLONIAL.DXF is an AutoCAD map that provides the locations of all collection lots with ceramics of the Colonial Period (see Langebaek 1995a, Fig. 7.1). Collection lot site numbers are not included. A low-resolution version of this map is also available for rapid on-line review. |
