Soil Samples

The data files SOIL.CSV and SOIL.XSLX provide information on soil samples collected at the Trapiche site. SOIL.CSV is a comma delimited UTF-8 CSV file; SOIL.XSLX contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the CSV file represents one bag of soil collected from a particular context. There are 120 lines, each with 11 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:

1 Bolsa N°: Numerical ID of bag in soil sample was stored.
2 Fecha: Date sample was collected.
3 Unidad: Unit where sample was collected. Excavation Units 4-25, without a 5 or 22. Each unit without a cuad extension is 1 x 1 m.
4 Cuad.: If the unit had a 1x1m extension, it was given the designation Cuad 1. Additional extensions were numbered sequentially (2, 3, …).
5 Sector: The site of Trapiche was divided into 3 sectors: A, B, and C.
6 Locus.: Each individual context (level, feature, wall, etc.) was given a unique locus number.
7 Volumen: Volume of sample measured in liters and grams.
8 Bolsa _ de _: "Bag _ of _" - This indicates if there were multiple bags for the same sample.
9 Ubicación: The location a soil sample was collected from in a locus.
10 Profundidad (below datum): Depth of the Locus measured in cm below datum.
11 Observaciones: General observations of material included within or methods used to collect sample.

The first line of the CSV file, for example, looks like this:

010-2,26/7/2018,UE-19,-,B,010,250g,1 de 1,50 cm N; 50 cm E,-,"starch, pollen, soil chemistry, phytolith"

This means that the soil sample remain comes from bag 010-2, was collected on July 26, 2018 (26/7/2018) at Unit UE-19, sector B, locus 010. The volume was 250 grams, was bag 1 of 1. Within the locus it was collected 50cm North and 50cm East; there is no depth information. The observations read: "starch, pollen, soil chemistry, phytolith".
