Trapiche Itapalluni Colonial Mining Dataset

Lithic Inventory

The data files LITHICS.CSV and LITHICS.XSLX provide information on lithic remains recovered through excavations carried out at the Trapiche site. LITHICS.CSV is a comma delimited UTF-8 CSV file; LITHICS.XSLX contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the CSV file represents one lithic artifact. There are 50 lines, each with 37 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:

1 Box N°: Numerical ID of box in which lithic was kept.
2 Inventory N°: A unique inventory number given to a bag. Numbered with the year of excavation (2018), followed by a unique number in sequential order. Note: Numbers were not given in any particular order, just in the way they were processed in the laboratory.
3 Sector: The site of Trapiche was divided into 3 sectors: A, B, and C.
4 Locus: Each individual context (level, feature, wall, etc.) was given a unique locus number.
5 Patio/ Recinto: Each unit was placed within a recinto (building) or a patio.
6 U.E.: Excavation Units 4-25, without a 5 or 22. Each unit without a cuad extension is 1x1m.
7 Cuad.: If the unit had a 1x1m extension, it was given the designation Cuad 1. Additional extensions were numbered sequentially (2, 3, …).
8 U.C.: Collection Unit (Surface Collection Unit)
9 Bag N°: An alternative bag number, different from Inventory Number. The first number of the bag number is the Locus. Then bags were numbered sequentially within each Locus.
10 Screen: Indicates size of screen used to recover artifact.
11 Bag _ of _: This indicates if there were multiple bags for the same sample.
12 Total Bag Count: Number of lithic remains in bag.
13 Total Bag Weight (g): Total weight of all lithics within a bag.
14 Excavators' Inicials: Initials of excavator
15 Date Excavated (DD,MM,YY)
16 Curators' Inicials: Initials of the laboratory assistant who curated sample.
17 Date Curated: Date of laboratory curation. (DD,MM,YY)
18 Analysts' Initials
19 Date analyzed (DD,MM,YY)
20 Lithic Type: Flake, Polishing stone, Core, Ecofact (not artifact).
21 Material Class: Igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic.
22 Material Type: Chert, Quartzite, Basalt (slightly less fine grained matrix, also with crystal inclusions), Andesite (very fine grained black matrix with some crystal inclusions), Granite (large inclusions that are dispersed throughout matrix), Quartz, Obsidian, sandstone.
23 Specific Type: River cobble, Flaked core, Bifacially thinning flake, Chopper.
24 Color: Black, Gray, Red, Brown, Black brown, Gray brown, Tan/yellow.
25 Inclusions: Quartz
26 Portion: Complete, ½, 2/3, 1/4 , etc., Fragment
27 Characteristics: Percussion bulb, Platform, Edge, Retouch, Reuse, Cortex, Grinding surface, Flake scars.
28 Description: Anything particular to note.
29 References: Identification guides
30 Indiv. Count: Number of individual lithics of a specific type from a particular context.
31 Indiv. Weight (g): Weight of individual lithic artifact.
32 Retouch: Yes/no
33 % of cortex: Cortex present in the artifact.
34 Unwashed: Yes/no
35 Phytolith wash: Indicates whether or not phytolith wash was performed (Yes/no).
36 Comments/Observations: Anything else to note.
37 Notes: Primarily – if this could be an ecofact

The first line of the CSV file, for example, looks like this:

15,2018-003,C,000,Patio 5,-,-,02,UC02-2,-,1 de 1,1,5.94,SAK,4/8/18,JMS,28/7/2018,SAK,1/11/18,Flake,Igneous,basalt,-,black,quartz,1/2 proximal, percussion bulb; cortical platform, flake with percussion platform, Castaño 2010,1,5.94,no,5-10%,-,-,multiple flake scars on ventral and dorsal sides,Note: could be ecofact (looks like flake but is natural)

This means that the artifact is from box 15, inventory 2018-003, sector C, locus 000, Patio 5. It is from U.C. 02, bag number UC02-2, bag 1 of 1, a total bag count of 1 and a total bag weight of 5.94 grams. It was excavated by SAK on 4/8/18, curated by JMS on 28/7/2018, and analyzed by SAK on 1/11/18. This is a flake type lithic made of igneous rock, specifically basalt, and is black with quartz inclusions. It represents 1/2 of the proximal portion, displaying a percussion bulb and cortical platform, and is described as "flake with percussion platform", using Castaño 2010 as a reference). There is 1 lithic of this descripton in the sample, weighing 5.94g, was not retouched, has 5-10% cortex. Comments are "multiple flake scars on ventral and dorsal sides", and notes are "could be ecofact (looks like flake but is natural)".
