Nepeña Valley Dataset
Hugo Cesar Ikehara Tsukayama

Ceramic Inventory

The data files CERAMIC.TXT and CERAMIC.XLS provide sherd counts by ware type and period for each collection carried out in the Nepeña Valley survey (for a description of each ware type described below see Appendix B of the dissertation associated with this dataset). CERAMIC.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file; CERAMIC.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the ASCII file corresponds to one survey unit. There are 2965 lines, each with 47 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:

1 Survey unit number. The designated ID for each survey unit. Numbers 206, 240, 241, 336, 488, 527, 863, 1038, 1333, 1336, 1372, 1778, and 2117 were elimitated from the dataset because after analysis the numbers of sherds collected were lower than the minimum required (see pages 53-54 of the dissertation associated with this dataset).
2 Count of sherds classified as Ware I-A.
3 Count of sherds classified as Ware I-B.
4 Count of sherds classified as Ware I-C.
5 Count of sherds classified as Ware I-D.
6 Count of sherds classified as Ware I-E.
7 Count of sherds classified as Ware I-F.
8 Count of sherds classified as Ware I-G.
9 Count of sherds classified as Ware II-A.
10 Count of sherds classified as Ware II-B.
11 Count of sherds classified as Ware II-C, variant A2.
12 Count of sherds classified as Ware II-C, variant L3.
13 Count of sherds classified as Ware II-D.
14 Count of sherds classified as Ware III-A.
15 Count of sherds classified as Ware III-B.
16 Count of sherds classified as Ware III-C.
17 Count of sherds classified as Ware III-D.
18 Count of sherds classified as Ware III-E.
19 Count of sherds classified as Ware III-F.
20 Count of sherds classified as Ware IV-A.
21 Count of sherds classified as Ware IV-B.
22 Count of sherds classified as Ware IV-C.
23 Count of sherds classified as Ware IV-D, variant D.
24 Count of sherds classified as Ware IV-D, variant D/1.
25 Count of sherds classified as Ware IV-D, variant D/2.
26 Count of sherds classified as Ware IV-E.
27 Count of sherds classified as Ware V-A.
28 Count of sherds classified as Ware V-B.
29 Count of sherds classified as Ware V-C.
30 Count of sherds classified as Ware V-D.
31 Count of sherds classified as Ware V-E.
32 Count of sherds classified as Ware V-F.
33 Count of sherds classified as Ware V-G.
34 Count of sherds classified as Ware V-H.
35 Count of sherds classified as porcelain.
36 Count of sherds classified as Ware IV, variant D/3.
37 Total number of sherds in the collection of the survey unit. Sum of variables 2-36.
38 Count of sherds from wares used during Period I (800-450 B.C.). Sum of variables 2-8. For classification methods see section 3.2 of the dissertation associated with this dataset.
39 Count of sherds from wares used during Periods I and II. Equal to variable 9. For classification methods see section 3.2 of the dissertation associated with this dataset.
40 Count of sherds from wares used during Period II (450-150 B.C.). Sum of variables 10-13. For classification methods see section 3.2 of the dissertation associated with this dataset.
41 Count of sherds from wares used during Periods II and III. Equal to variable 14. For classification methods see section 3.2 of the dissertation associated with this dataset.
42 Count of sherds from wares used during Period III (150 B.C. - A.D. 500). Sum of variables 15-19. For classification methods see section 3.2 of the dissertation associated with this dataset.
43 Count of sherds from wares used during Period IV (A.D. 500 - 1000). Sum of variables 20-26. For classification methods see section 3.2 of the dissertation associated with this dataset.
44 Count of sherds from wares used during Period V (A.D. 1000-1500+). Sum of variables 27-36. For classification methods see section 3.2 of the dissertation associated with this dataset.
45 Period I final count. Because some wares could be attributed to either Period I or II a final Period I sherd count was estimated by proportionally assigning counts from variable 39 to either Period I or II according to the ratio between variables 38 and 40. For a description of this process, see page 82 of the dissertation associated with this dataset.
46 Period II final count. Because some wares could be attributed to multiple periods, a final Period II sherd count was estimated by proportionally assigning counts from variable 39 to either Period I or II according to the ratio between variables 38 and 40. Likewise, sherds counts from variable 41 were proportionally assigned to Period II or III according to the ratio between variables 40 and 42. For a description of this process, see page 82 of the dissertation associated with this dataset.
47 Period III final count. Because some wares could be attributed to either Period II or III a final Period III sherd count was estimated by proportionally assigning counts from variable 41 to either Period II or III according to the ratio between variables 40 and 42. For a description of this process, see page 82 of the dissertation associated with this dataset.

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

1,,,,1,,,,,2,2,,,,,,,,,3,,,,1,,,,2,49,,,24,,,,,84,1,0,4,0,0,4,75,1,4,0

This means that survey unit 1 collected 1 sherd of Ware type I-D, 2 sherds of type II-B, 2 sherds of type II-C, 3 sherds of type IV-A, 1 sherd of type IV-D, 2 sherds of type V-B, 49 sherds of type V-C, and 24 sherds of type V-F, for a total of 84 sherds in the collection. These sherds break down to 1 sherd for Period I, 0 for Periods I/II, 4 for Period II, 0 for Periods II/III, 0 for Period III, 4 for Period IV, and 75 for Period V. Because some wares could be attributed to multiple periods, final sherd counts were calculated for those periods in which there was ambiguity. For those periods the final sherd counts are: 1 for Period I, 4 for Period II, and 0 for Period III.

The last, or 2965 line of the ASCII text file is:

2965,,,,,,,,,2,,2,,,,,,,1,2,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,7,0,0,4,0,1,2,0,0,4,1

This means that survey unit 2965 collected 2 sherds of Ware type II-B, 2 sherds of type II-C, 1 sherd of type III-F, 2 sherds of type IV-A, for a total of 7 sherds in the collection. These sherds break down to 0 sherds for Period I, 0 for Periods I/II, 4 for Period II, 0 for Periods II/III, 1 for Period III, 2 for Period IV, and 0 for Period V. Because some wares could be attributed to multiple periods, final sherd counts were calculated for those periods in which there was ambiguity. For those periods the final sherd counts are: 0 for Period I, 4 for Period II, and 1 for Period III.
