Ceramic Analysis

The data files CERAMICS.TXT and CERAMICS.XLS provide ceramic counts by type for each collection lot. CERAMICS.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file, CERAMICS.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the ASCII file represents information for one collection lot. There are 497 lines, each with 15 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:

1 Collection lot of approximately 25 x 25 meters.
2 East Coordinate (UTM for zone/sector 18N) for Northeast corner of the collection lot.
3 North Coordinate (UTM for zone/sector 18N) for Northeast corner of the collection lot.
4 Number of (2 x 4 m) collection units needed to gather a minimum of 40 surface artifacts.
5 Number of Early El Bolo sherds.
6 Number of Early El Bolo sherds that were decorated.
7 Number of Early El Bolo ollas identified from the sherds.
8 Number of Early El Bolo plates identified from the sherds.
9 Number of Early El Bolo bowls identified from the sherds.
10 Number of Late El Bolo sherds.
11 Number of Late El Bolo sherds that were decorated.
12 Number of Late El Bolo ollas identified from the sherds.
13 Number of Late El Bolo plates identified from the sherds.
14 Number of Late El Bolo bowls identified from the sherds.
15 Number of alcarrazas identified from the sherds.

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

2A6,1080747,876107,3,5,4,1,0,0,31,1,0,1,1,0

Which means that the sherds came from collection lot 2A6. The North-East corner of the collection lot is located at Easting UTM coordinate 1080747, and Northing UTM coordinate 876107. Up to 3 collection units were needed to gather the minimum of 40 artifacts required by the field methodology. A total of 5 Early El Bolo sherds were collected, of which 4 were decorated and 1 was an olla. No Early El Bolo plates or bowls were collected. A total of 31 Late El Bolo sherds were collected, of which 1 was decorated. No Late El Bolo ollas were collected, but 1 Late El Bolo plate and 1 Late El Bolo bowl were collected. No alcarrazas were collected.

The last, or 497 line of the ASCII text file is:

31B11,1082048,875876,3,2,0,0,0,0,20,1,0,1,0,0

Which means that the sherds came from collection lot 31B11. The North-East corner of the collection lot is located at Easting UTM coordinate 1082048, and Northing UTM coordinate 875876. Up to 3 collection units were needed to gather the minimum of 40 artifacts required by the field methodology. A total of 2 Early El Bolo sherds were collected. No Early El Bolo decorated sherds were collected. Similarly, no Early El Bolo ollas, plates or bowls were collected. A total of 20 Late El Bolo sherds were collected, of which 1 was decorated. No Late El Bolo ollas or bowls were collected, but 1 Late El Bolo plate was collected. No alcarrazas were collected.
