Artifact Inventory

The data files INVENTORY.TXT and INVENTORY.XLS provide artifact counts for each collection unit registered within the Sogamoso Valley regional survey, including ceramic counts sorted by style, period, and form, as well as calculations for sherd densities for all collection units. INVENTORY.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file. INVENTORY.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the data files represents one survey collection unit. There are 920 lines, each with 120 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

1 Collection unit code*. An alphanumeric code that identifies each collection unit. These correspond to the collection unit numbers provided in the Location of all Collection Units section of this dataset.

*Unit codes ending in "COLARC" mean that collection units were drawn based on colonial architecture.
2 Collection type--the methodology used in collecting artifacts
    General = General collection
    Systematic = Systematic collection
    Shovel = Shovel prove
    n/a = Not available (for Colonial Period collection units based on colonial architecture)
3 Number of collection circles (for systematic collections).
4 Vegetation type
5 Total number of sherds in collection.
6 Number of unknown sherds.

This means that the collection unit number is 10C1, in which a general collection was taken (thus, no number of collection circles is provided). The vegetation type is "Perfil" (profile). In this collection unit, a total of 2 sherds were collected, 1 Republican Period and 1 Modern Period sherd. This means that the collection unit number is 9H4, in which a general collection was taken (thus, no number of collection circles is provided). The vegetation type is "Cultivo" (cultivated field). In this collection unit, a total of 44 sherds were collected. They included a total of 10 Vidriado sherds (of which 1 was a cup sherd), 3 Dragged Temper ware sherds, 9 Coarse Caramel ware sherds (of which all 9 were of the Coarse variant), 3 Coarse Red ware sherds. This means that the collection had 0 Herrera sherds, 9 Early Muisca sherds, 3 Late Muisca sherds, 13 Colonial Period sherds, 8 Republican Period sherds, and 11 Modern Period sherds. This resulted in a density of 7.5 persons per hectare during the Early Muisca Period, 7.5 persons per hectare during the Late Muisca Period, 7.5 persons per hectare during the Colonial Period, and 12.5 persons per hectare during the Republican Period. No other types of artifacts or lithics were recorded.
