Shellfish

The data files SHELL.TXT and SHELL.XLS provide the number of specimens of different shellfish species for each context and bag within the Pedregal site. SHELL.TXT is an ASCII text file, and SHELL.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line represents one bag. There are 813 lines in the text file, each with 25 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

This indicates that the specimens come from context 2, bag 40, which contained 1 Prisogaster niger, 10 Polinices uber, 1 Thais chocolata, 1 Thais haemastoma, 1 Xanthochorus buxea, 1 Nassarius dentifer, 1 Tegula atra, and 2 Donax obesulus specimens.

The last, or 813th, line of the ASCII text file is:

669,2765,1,0,0,1,0,0,0,1,0,0,0,1,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,1

This indicates that the specimens come from context 669, bag 2765, which contained 1 Prisogaster niger, 1 Thais haemastoma, 1 Scutalus proteus, 1 Choromytilus chorus, and 1 Platyxanthus orbignyi specimens.
