Surface Lithic Implements

The data files SURFIMPLEMENTS.TXT and SURFIMPLEMENTS.XLS provide the counts for lithic implement in each surface collection unit, organized by form. The data corresponds to Table B.8. (pp. 449) of the dissertation associated with this dataset. SURFIMPLEMENTS.TXT is an ASCII text file; SURFIMPLEMENTS.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line represents one surface collection unit. There are 134 lines in the text file, each with 17 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

1

Sector

2

Unit

3

Total number of lithic implements

4

Number of nodules

5

Number of flakes

6

Number of pulidores

7

Number of manos

8

Number of utilized cores

9

Number of projectile points

10

Number of choppers

11

Number of hoes

12

Number of expedient tools

13

Number of quartz crystals

14

Number of quartz fragments

15

Number of chrysocolla

16

Number of lajas

17

Number of other implements

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

F,1,15,0,1,1,0,7,2,0,4,0,0,0,0,0

This indicates that the data pertains to lithics collected in sector F, Unit 1. It contained a total of 15 lithic implements, of which 10 were flakes, 1 was an expedient tool, and 4 were quartz crystals. No nodules, pulidores, manos, utilized cores, projectile points, choppers, hoes, quartz fragments, chysacola, lajas, or other implements were identified.

The last, or 134th, line of the ASCII text file is:

A,138,7,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,7,0,0,0,0,0

This indicates that the data pertains to lithics collected in sector A, Unit 138. It contained a total of 7 lithic implements, two of which were quartz crystals and 5 of which were quartz fragments. No nodules, flakes, pulidores, manos, utilized cores, projectile points, choppers, hoes, expedient tools, chrysocolla, lajas, or other implements were identified.
