Surface Debitage

The data files SURFDEBITAGE.TXT and SURFDEBITAGE.XLS contain flake weights and counts for different surface collection units of the Yahuay Alta community. The data corresponds to Table B.9. (pp.453) of the dissertation associated with this dataset. SURFDEBITAGE.TXT is an ASCII text file; SURFDEBITAGE.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line represents one collection unit. There are 103 lines in the text file, each with 16 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

This indicates that the data pertains to debitage collected in sector F, Unit 1. It had a total of 10 debitage fragments which weighed 12.9g. Of these, 6 fragments <2cm weighed 4.6g, 4 fragments 2-4cm weighed 8.3g, and there were no recorded fragments which were 6-8, 8-10, or >10cm.

The last, or 103th, line of the ASCII text file is:

A,137,1,5.1,0,0.0,1,5.1,0,0.0,0,0.0,0,0.0,0,0.0

This indicates that the data pertains to debitage collected in sector A, Unit 137. It had a total of 1 fragment of debitage, which was 2-4cm in diameter and weighed 5.1g.
