The data files SURFDATA.TXT and SURFDATA.XLS contain raw artifact counts for all archaeological materials recovered from surface collections at the Yahuay Alta Community. The data corresponds to Table B.1. (pp. 411) of the dissertation associated with this dataset. SURFDATA.TXT is an ASCII text file; SURFDATA.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line represents one category of artifacts within a given collection unit. There are 417 lines in the text file, each with 6 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

This indicates that the data pertains to artifacts collected in Sector F, Unit 1. The material class is ceramic, from an "Artificial accumulation of sherds." There were 69 sherds of this class within the unit, which weighed a total of 903 grams.
The last, or 417th, line of the ASCII text file is:
A,138,Animal Bone,,1,0.3
This indicates that the data pertains to artifacts collected in Sector A, Unit 138. The material class is Animal Bone. There was 1 artifact belonging to this class within the unit, which weighed a total of 0.3 grams.
