Surface Ceramics

The data files SURFCERAMICS.TXT and SURFCERAMICS.XLS contain ceramic ware counts for each surface collection unit carried out at the Yahuay Alta Community. The data corresponds to Table B.4. (pp. 429) of the dissertation associated with this dataset. Detailed explanations for paste and vessel types can be found in Appendix A (pp. 377-410). SURFCERAMICS.TXT is an ASCII text file; SURFCERAMICS.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line represents one surface collection unit. There are 144 lines in the text file, each with 10 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

F,1,70,28,38,3,1,0,0,0

This indicates that the data pertains to sector F, unit 1. It had a total of 70 sherds, of which 28 were Huaracane Vegetal sherds, 38 were Huaracane Arena, 3 were Huaracane Fino, and 1 was Pasta Biotite. No Pasta Centro Rosada, Pasta Naranja, or "Other" sherds were recovered.

The last, or 144th, line of the ASCII text file is:

A,138,77,72,3,2,0,0,0,0

This indicates that the data pertains to sector A, unit 138. It had a total of 77 sherds, of which 72 were Huaracane Vegetal sherds, 3 were Huaracane Arena, and 2 were Huaracane Fino. No Pasta Biotite, Pasta Centro Rosada, or Pasta Naranja, or "Other" sherds were recovered.
