The data files NISP-MARINOS.TXT and NISP-MARINOS.XLS provide marine invertebrate counts for the four excavated units (6A, 6B, 8 and 9) by Stratigraphic Unit (S.U.). The remains were identified at the species (in italics) and family (in upper case)levels. For the NISP counts all specimens (complete valves, fragmented valves, fragments) were considered. NISP-MARINOS.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file, while NISP-MARINOS.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the ASCII file corresponds to a unique stratigraphic unit (S.U.). There are 548 lines, each with 34 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:
1 | Stratigraphic Unit (S.U.). A natural or cultural layer or feature, sequentially numbered within an excavation unit, where the alphanumeric part to the left of the period identifies the unit, and the digits to the right of the period identify the layer or feature. |
2 | NISP counts of Argopecten purpuratus specimens, a bivalve of the PECTINIDAE family. |
3 | NISP counts of Aulacomya ater specimens, a bivalve of the MYTILIDAE family. |

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:
6A.2,2,,4,4,5,1,,,,,,2,,4,17,,,,,,,2,,,,,,,,,,,41
Which means that the marine invertebrate remains came from S.U. 6A.2. Two NISP of Argopecten purpuratus (Family: PECTINIDAE), 4 NISP of Choromytilus chorus (Family: MYTILIDAE), 4 NISP of Mesodesma donacium (Family: MESODESMATIDAE), 5 NISP of Mulinia edulis (Family: MACTRIDAE), 1 NISP of Perumytilus purpuratus (Family: MYTILIDAE), 2 NISP of Crepipatella sp. (Family: CALYPTRAEIDAE), 4 NISP of Nassarius gayi (Family: NASSARIIDAE), 17 NISP of Polinices uber (Family: NATICIDAE), and 2 NISP of Oliva peruviana (Family: OLIVIDAE) were collected. A total of 41 NISP counts were collected in this S.U.
The last, or 548th line of the ASCII text file is:
9.46,,,,14,2,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,1,,,,17
Which means that the marine invertebrate remains came from S.U. 9.46. Fourteen (14) NISP of Mesodesma donacium (Family: MESODESMATIDAE), 2 NISP of Mulinia edulis (Family: MACTRIDAE), and 1 NISP of Balanus sp. (Family: BALANIDAE) were collected. A total of 17 NISP counts were collected in this S.U.
